$575 million program to increase teacher effectiveness, total failure

https://www.the74million.org/study-multi-year-gates-experiment-to-improve-teacher-effectiveness-spent-575-million-didnt-make-an-impact/

With minor exceptions, by 2014–2015, student achievement, access to effective teaching, and dropout rates were not dramatically better than they were for similar sites that did not participate in the Intensive Partnerships initiative.

This demonstrates, yet again, that there’s no amount of money that can be spent on schools that will make kids smarter.

The liberal hypothesis, that bad outcomes for blacks and other minorities (but not for Asians) are at least partially because of bad schools, is false.

  1. I’m good friends with a NYC public school teacher. She is an immigrant, a woman of color, and a lesbian. Needless to say she is leftist. The only time I ever heard say something conservative was to complain about the mandates to raise student grades. She told me her students were uneducated immigrants from rural villages in the third world. How is she suppose to get them to pass algebra. She said “They’re expecting me to do miracles!”

    • Black people willingly indulge in realtalk, or its inverse, when it excuses them from blame or work. Or when it or allows for an easier explanation of their reality than the perspective born of the average Leftist White’s work, self-sacrifice, and universal perspective.

This is why you’ll sometimes hear of welfare blacks looking down at liberal whites, when talking among themselves. At their core, they don’t understand such self-sacrifice and see it as fundamentally nonsensical and weak. After all, the logic of their liberalism is self serving and not self sacrificial for the common good. They have been taught to feel entitled to this double standard.

This is likely why this teacher friend of yours is so apt to imply a lack of aptitude. I lets her off of the hook. The average white liberal would not commonly allow themselves that indulgence, and would likely continue to blame universal inequality, institutional racism, the system, etc.

RBG would have remained on the Court even if Hillary won. Ginsburg’s goal was to beat Oliver Wendell Holmes’ record for being the oldest Supreme Court Justice to retire (Holmes retired at age 90).

  3. Also, see the Kansas City Schools experiment. Almost two billion dollars were spent on this mostly minority public school district. Teacher salaries were raised, state of the art classrooms built, with new facilities, computer labs, and other amenities purchased. No expense was spared. In the end, none of it mattered. Test scores temained virtually rhe same as before the money was spent.

    • I was going to mention that. The KC story is almost too crazy to believe.

Taking the top 7% out of all middle schools across the city isn’t the worst idea though, not that they should replace the specialized high schools with this system, they should just create a different network of schools for the top segment. Even in the worst schools there are some kids who behave and want to learn. (I know this post isn’t about specialized HSs but I was reading about this today- https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/29/nyregion/specialized-school-exam-losers-winners.html )

  4. To those of us who believe in HBD, this comes as no surprise. But the question remains, how exactly do you get the rest of society to open their eyes, to see beyond their confirmation biases and to acknowledge the obvious. Part of the reason that acknowledging schools results differ based on race (and not racism) is that racial equality is a central plank within leftist philosophy. Removing that one plank would more likely than not bring down their whole house of cards. Leftists understand this (at least unconscious) and thus become ultra-defensive in the face of cognitive dissonance. The HBD right has no option but to keep piling up the facts, keep screaming out the truth, until the left’s house colappses onto itself.

Teaching was likely not substantially improved, and this is due to the fact that there was likely a less than optimal ceiling on teacher IQ, which also supports the reality of HBD. But even if the entire teacher cadre had been replaced with 130+ IQ teachers there would have been no noticeable improvement in student scores. Will leftists ever accept the reality of HBD? Probably not, never.

      • “But even if the entire teacher cadre had been replaced with 130+ IQ teachers”

Leftists don’t believe in IQ, they believe in education and training, so training the teachers to be better teachers is what they believe in and what failed.

      • You’re simply wrong about that. There are well tested interventions which get past the problem of teacher competence by giving them carefully tested scripts. And they have been proven to dramatically raise student abilities and test scores in poverty black schools. You’re just wrong buddy.

      • >>You’re simply wrong about that. There are well tested interventions which get past the problem of teacher competence by giving them carefully tested scripts. <<

I rarely, ever, got any benefit from sitting in a classroom. Attending class was a fruitless annoyance. What I got benefit from was opening up the text, reading the chapter and then doing massive amounts of practical problems. I could ace just about any course (chemistry, math, physics, etc…) if I spent enough time – and it was a lot of time – doing homework problems. Lower IQ students have lots of trouble with homework. They just cannot do it. They can't figure things out on their own, and when they meet with a teacher, extra-classroom – they seldom "get" the problem at hand. Furthermore, the most gifted teacher has only so much time to share.

The best way to help low IQ citizens is to restrict immigration so that capital owners are compelled to part with some more of their capital in the form of wages. Low IQ people do not envy your life. They just want to make a decent living and spend time with their family and hobbies, and be left alone. It would take so little to measurably improve the lot of the less intelligent. Restrict immigration.

Still, any White prolette who goes into teaching at one of our NYC’s Board of Ed schools, come in with a liberal mindset. They teach at a NAM school, at a prole school, and a multiracial environment. What they will not do is teach at a school filled only with Asian immigrants in Chinatown. White people don’t really like the intense focus of Asians on rote learning and many of them lack the spontaneity and exuberance of blacks, Hispanics and Whites, which go against mainstream American “culture”.

That would be suitable for the lowest performing schools, and increasingly unsuitable as the population quality improved. In elite prep schools, that step would be unthinkable. The instructor-student relationship is considered to be too hallowed and critical to the development of the little Lords (a phrase used without condescension).

I can see a future in which human teachers are an upper class privilege, and in which communists rave about such unfairness (when the robots fail to create outcome equality, of course).

  6. This study focused and evaluating teacher performance with in class observation, giving bonuses to effective teachers and firing poor teachers. To a great extent this is a conservative plan for improving schools although many Democrats support this idea too.

In my opinion the core problem with our public schools is over the last 50 years we have been gradually lowering the status of public school teachers. The pay has not kept up with inflation and politician have relentless blamed the problems with public schools on the teachers as an excuse for not increasing teacher pay.

I knew several people who started as public school teachers, quickly realized that was a dead end job, and got out to do something else. While there are some good dedicated teachers who stick with teaching, many of the best quickly leave or never even start.

      • yeah dont underestimate the effect of the teachers undermining the system. From the article:

The rating inflation arose partially from the fact that teachers grew resistant to the new evaluations being used for high-stakes decisions like compensation and firing. Indeed, the Pittsburgh Teachers Union kicked up so much of a fuss over the new criteria that the district nearly lost its $40 million grant. Superintendent Linda Lane had to lower the minimum score for effectiveness — twice — before the issue was resolved.”

So they kept the crappy teachers, which undermined the intervention.

Thats part of the problem- the students arent really the customers because they are only there for a limited time. By the time they get the test scores in the have already graduated and moved on.

Its the teachers- who are there for 20-30 years who are the real customers. And the administration is going to try to keep them happy first and foremost.

Lion should report on the results of this much ballyhooed nyc school which tried just overpaying teachers to get results.

    • In my opinion our core problem with public schools has been dreaming our way towards rejecting inherent hereditarian differences.

My same-sex cousin, who lived across the nation from me and whom I rarely saw, got a near identical score as me on the PSAT back when it was G loaded, both of us at an extreme tail for our states. We had different intellectual interests, he was into math and sports, I was into literature and music, but both of us were in the top 0.5 %. This event suggested to me that heritability was paramount.

    • Writer Richard Mitchell (former professor at Rowan University) made the interesting observation many years ago that teaching is one of the few professions where the hardest jobs are the entry-level jobs and the work gets easier as you move up the career and status ladder. Interesting and original observations are very rare when discussing education. Neil Postman also pointed out in “The End of Education” that since at least the mid 20th century there has been more information available to people outside of school than inside of school. For most of human history, schools (when they existed) provided the books for the students and then students also took class notes. Inexpensive mass-produced books mean that even relatively poor people could learn most of what was needed to be well-educated. This doesn’t mean, though, that everyone could afford the cost of college, or the outrageous cost of college textbooks where you have to buy “the 10th edition” for $175 as opposed to the nearly identical 4th edition used for $25!

Guidos have the gall and the will to call out NAMs for what they are and install tight fisted procedures “so they don’t reach out with their hands for the cookie jar again without permission”.

It’s quite interesting to note that most IAs were never great bosses/leaders in a multicult environment, hence their lack of status in the elite world that “embrace” tolerance for diversity. Perversely and conversely, blacks also operate in a similar manner when it comes to dealing with others who are different. Lion is thereby correct to say that blacks are by nature “conservative”, the same way narrow mindedness is a common trait among “conservative” Whites like IAs.

No, pols and cuck columnists have relentlessly blamed the public schools because it’s politically impossible for them to say, “bad students, not bad teachers.” Gotta blame someone.

Being a public school teacher at least in NYC was a decently well-paid job, not year round, good benefits. You didn’t get rich but it wasn’t hard, and you had lots of smart kids to teach. Unlikely, because Whites feel less comfortable among East Asians than NAMs when it comes to liberal think.

In no way shape or form are NAMs preferable to Asian immigrants for teachers. NAM students are as opposite of “student” as it gets within the human race. Asian students are largely as easy as it gets. Very few are trouble an those that are are very easy to wrangle back into line. They are largely pleasant and agreeable. A NAM might punch you in the face. All of this is from my direct experience. I’ve taught in a high school in Asia itself, as well as in an inner city NAM school. White teachers might prefer “White” kids on the whole, even with the term and actual population samples of “White” being an overly wide designation that includes many undesirables, bu I promise you that Asian immigrants are very desirable as students for the average teacher. Part of has to do with upbringing. Proles and NAMs are pretty much useless to teach using our current pedagogical methods.

I hardly learnt anything of substance at my public HS and it was a good school with quite a number of kids coming from the Upper Wealthy Sides of Manhattan. One thing that really stuck to my head was one of my teachers who was Jewish, and she made it clear that she didn’t like her White gentile colleagues. I had one history teacher who was of Castilian, Hispanic surname, but he was a Spaniard, who constantly talked about his ex-girlfriend when the opportunity arose. It turns out that she was Iranian, and because of her, he was impassioned about a subject like Shiite Islam. He often mentioned how the Shiites were oppressed by the Sunnis in a country like Iraq when discussing religion or when it was a chapter on Middle Eastern History. Most students including myself were confounded and some just dozed off.

I somewhat like the substitute teachers, they seem to bring a refreshing curriculum or an outsider’s approach to teaching.

For proles, K-12 is BS, and for many upper class students in self segregated K-12, it’s grooming or socialization for elite higher education.

      • SWPLS won’t make much of a rebel army, but they will make very good terrorist bombers. During the 60’s we had lots of leftist inspired bombings. Being a bomber allows the SWPL to live a normal life, and hang out at Starbucks, AND fight Drumpf with direct action. Considering how ubiquitous the knowlege to make explosives is now because of the internet, I think bombings will be the new civil war.

      • There won’t be anything like the ’60s bombing campaigns because mass surveillance has made it too hard to get away with for long. Anyone who’s good at it will be squelched quickly like the Austin bomber. The modern trend is for one-off kamikaze attacks using anything available, and if leftists do get violent they will be creatures of their time.

    • This talk of civil war is absurd. Life in America is way too comfy and people are way too lazy to launch a civil war. The people who would be the soldiers (I’m thinking poor blacks, here) and the officers (college educated hipsters) for the leftist insurgent army enjoy sitting around watching TV and smoking weed and playing video games and eating fancy food, and our society is so rich they can do this stuff without hardly working. Will they really trade in this soft life for a life of hiding in the woods, eating rations or roadkill, and exchanging rifle fire with SWAT teams or the Marines?

Or do these morons think Jerry Brown is going to lead the California National Guard in an attack on the Marine base in San Diego while Cuomo leads the New York National Guard in a march on Washington?

    • civil war will start with national breakdown. You’ll have right wingers killing journalists, gays, minorities and left wing politicians and left wingers killing white people, cops and right wing politicians. As civil unrest accelerates, the military will ultimately have to intervene and will then fracture the same way that it did in Syria and Yemen.

The absolute minimum that happens in America is that there is an insurgency ala contemporary Egypt.

People in places like 1917 Russia and 1940s China and today’s Yemen rebel because life is bad and because they are true believers in a cause. People in America today don’t care about immigration the way a Lenin or Mao cared about Marxism in the first half of the 20th century, enough to murder people and risk their lives in pitched battles. Are you and the Lion going to shoot it out with the cops over immigration? They think that boys outperform girls in math because boys aggressively monopolize teachers’ attention and because girls are afraid of appearing unfeminine to boys. They also believe that your typical schoolgirl is sexually harassed and raped on a daily basis by male students.

The problems would start when the advanced classes in the all male schools started doing really interesting and important things and the female urge to invade male space kicks in.

Which is ridiculous because there’s nothing unfeminine about math, it’s not like it requires muscles to do it, and in fact girls do do better in math in some circumstances than boys, while doing much better than boys in every other subject in school.

      • I doubt segregating genders has any significant impact on academic performance. It’s nice in an old fashioned kind of way but at the end of the day it comes down to inherent aptitude and family stability.

For high school I went to an all girls school that had recently turned coed and was about 20% male. So in a class of 20 there might be 3 or 4 guys. They did indeed do all the talking during class discussions. It was kind of weird.

My teenage daughters attend an all girls school and I have mixed feelings about it. I wish they had smart boys to go up against, kind of like rousey always practiced on men.

I think they would agree with your premises, but not your conclusions. They would see advocacy of sex-segregated schooling as victim-blaming, analagous to telling rape victims they need to dress modestly and avoid going out late at night in order to prevent getting raped. “Oh noes, the poor boys just can’t help themselves, we’ll have to remove the girls from their presence because they just can’t learn that girls are fully human with equal rights! No, the solution is for boys to learn to act like civilized human beings for a change, not to kick girls out of ‘their’ schools.”

  12. Two points:

    1) You can’t significantly raise low-IQ NAM academic performance even if you have more money and the finest teachers. And America’s teachers are dogshit.

    2) Even without NAMs, the institution of school ITSELF is the problem. Says Mencken:

“School days, I believe, are the unhappiest in the whole span of human existence. They are full of dull, unintelligible tasks, new and unpleasant ordinances, brutal violations of common sense and common decency. It doesn’t take a reasonably bright boy long to discover that most of what is rammed into him is nonsense, and that no one really cares very much whether he learns it or not.”

“The most erroneous assumption is to the effect that the aim of public education is to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence, and so make them fit to discharge the duties of citizenship in an enlightened and independent manner. Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim of public education is not to spread enlightenment at all; it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States, whatever the pretensions of politicians, pedagogues and other such mountebanks, and that is its aim everywhere else.”

  13. Education is in the dumps. My daughter teaches in an elite private school, has good benefits, makes six figures, tutors for $120 an hour and is very popular. Next year she has a Sabbatical and is thinking of switching to a different occupation because she is bored with trying to teach kids, who don’t want to learn. I’ve met them and they are actually very nice and smart, it’s just that wealth and information overload had distorted their personalities and made them intellectually lazy. A Talmudic saying comes to mind: ‘Poverty befits Israel like a red bridle for a white horse’, meaning it’s good for the Jews. They will do fine without education by going into parents’ business, but she should try to get out.

Here you have it: the best equipment and facilities, teacher hired on merit and paid well, high IQ Jewish kids and you can’t teach them serious science or math or anything. When she had taught in Dimona, a poor southern town in Israel, kids, who didn’t have electricity at home, were more eager students.

This is very confusing to me. It’s pretty shocking to have so many Jews, who don’t want to study. I mean, what happened to the Jewish genes and what happened to the Viking genes that they let their home to be invaded by foreigners? Where is HBD when we need it?

I can’t stop thanking the Almighty for my childhood in the anti-semitic USSR. With my low IQ I might have been a moron had I grown up in America. Who knows?

It paid the least she’d ever earned, but I wasn’t proud of her doing it. Kids asked her: ‘Did you come all the way from America to teach us?’. Sweet kids they were. I wish she’d stayed in Israel.
