Hasidim don’t believe in anointing oneself with deodorant or anti-perspirant?

Learned something today. Wiki on ABCC11:
“The history of the migration of humans can be traced back using the ABCC11 gene alleles. The variation between ear wax and body odor in ethnicities around the world are specifically due to the ABCC11 gene alleles.[7] It is hypothesized that 40,000 years ago, an ancient Mongoloid tribe evolved the dry ear wax phenotype that followed a spread of the dry ear wax allele to other regions of Asia via migration of the ancient tribe.[10] The gene spread as a result of it being a beneficial adaption or through an evolutionary neutral mutation mechanism that went through genetic drift events.[10]
“The frequency of alleles for dry ear wax and odorless sweat is most concentrated in East- and Northeast Asia, most notably Korea, China, Mongolia, and western Japan.[7] Conversely the frequency of the allele for wet ear wax and odored sweat are highest in African-American and sub-saharan populations.[7] A downward gradient of dry ear wax allele phenotypes can be drawn from northern China to southern Asia and a east-west gradient can also be drawn from eastern Siberia to western Europe.[7] The allele frequencies within ethnicities continued to be maintained because the ABCC11 gene is inherited as a haplotype, a group of genes or alleles that tend to be inherited as a single unit[7][11]”

It must have something to do with the layers of clothing they’re expected to wear to be respectable. They make no concession to the heat, insisting on attire that may have made sense in the mild summers of Central Europe.
A daily shower can only help so much in combatting the effects of this utter pigheadedness.

Some years back my wife and I visited Israel. With the exception of multiple Indian Army officer types in the lobby of the David Intercontinental in Tel Aviv, we saw very few Indians anywhere. A few days later in Jerusalem we were thrilled to come upon an Indian restaurant. To our surprise a good many of the people inside appeared to be Indian. On further inquiry, our Indian waiter informed us that almost all the Indians (diners and waiters) were in fact Jews who’d emigrated from India to Israel. I was genuinely surprised.

That was a fascinating article thanks. Three things struck me as interesting.
1. The journalist had to explain to his readers that a Rabbi is a “head priest”. One couldn’t imagine it living in the New York area but there are large parts of the world which don’t even know the basics of Judaism.
2. The Jews get respect from the locals for *not* assimilating. It makes sense in a country with a caste system I suppose.
3. Despite not seeming to be in any economic distress or persecuted in any way, the Jews want affirmative action bennies like “any other minority group in the country.” That’s inevitably what happens under Socialism.

Ruben brothers are Iraqi Jews, who had lived in India less than 200 years. This has nothing to do with India.
The brothers were born in Mumbai, India, the sons of David Sassoon Reuben and Nancy Reuben,[7] a prosperous Iraqi Jewish family.[4] The family had lived in British India since the mid-1800s with other fellow Jews such as Baron Kadoorie (the father of Sir Michael Kadoorie), the Sassoon family and many other Jewish families.[citation needed] The brothers arrived in London in the 1950s with their mother,

Learned another thing today (I had a vague remembrance of reading about Jews in India (there were also a few in Pakistan but they all left. That latter learned from the Pakistani Express Tribune”. Wiki on name “Sassoon”:
“The Sassoon family, known as “Rothschilds of the East” due to the great wealth they accumulated in trade,[1] is of Baghdadi Jewish descent and international renown. It was based in Baghdad, Iraq, before moving to Bombay, India, and then spreading to China, England, and other countries. It is said that the family descended from the Shoshans, one of the families of Iberian Peninsula.[2] From the 18th century, the Sassoons were one of the wealthiest families in the world, with a merchant empire spanning the continent of Asia.[3]”

Unlike the Reubens in India, most American Jews have have family histories in the US for significantly shorter time periods than 200 years, yet still call themselves and are considered American. And the brothers are on the UK rich list despite the fact that they weren’t born there, only moved there in the 1950s and currently domicile in Monaco and Miami. The world is a cosmopolitan place.

Mate, when it comes to Jews, you can give the benefit of a doubt that I know what I’m talking about, you know. My ex was from the Iraqi Indian community and her grandparents spoke Arabic at home. Hardly anyone, even from her generation, had considered themselves Indian. That community arrived in India with the British conquest to take advantage of the opportunities that became available. They identified with the British and their ways rather than with the native Indians. As the British left, so did the Iraqi Jews.

It depends, some of the Indian Jews are Iraqi Jews that kept their Iraqi heritage but some mixed with locals. Most of Kochin Jews for example look more like Indians. In the video I have linked there is one girl who says that her parents were Iraqi Indians and she indeed looks less Indian than the other Jews in the video.

There were 3 distinct communities: Iraqi, Kouchin and Bnei Israel. They latter two spoke Indian languages and had lived in India for a very long time.

Well you see, comparing yourself to the British used to be a national sport in India. My snobby grand-mother used to tell me (during my summer holidays in India), that our family was nothing like the common people, we were civilized and advanced she insisted, just like the British. And this from a woman who was Sikh. And she wasn’t the only one, I’d hear such stuff from other (usually elderly) family members as well. Admittedly, I don’t have much knowledge of Jews in India, but I’d watched an insightful clip of a documentary on the subject by Jermy Piven, a few years back. My time at the restaurant in Jerusalem—that I earlier mentioned—was the first time I’d seen Indian Jews in the flesh, and to my culturally immersed Indian eyes, they looked and sounded very Indian.

I won’t blame someone for genetics that makes them more prone to sweat that smells. Nor will a fault someone for a slight odor over the course of a day. But there’s a big difference between the odor one accumulates from normal sweating during a hot summer’s day and the putrid funk that ferments over several days of not washing. In a modern age where even the poor have easy access to soap and water (and a washing machine) there’s simply no excuse.

human sweat per se doesn’t have much odor. the odor comes from bacteria.
HBD tears
July 11, 2018 at EST pm
Sweat produced by the apocrine glands contains a carbohydrate called sialomucin. The bacteria create the odor as a by-product of breaking down this sugar through fermentation. It takes time for the sugars and bacteria to accumulate. That’s why it takes time to develop foul BO. If you wash it off before it accumulates then it won’t be very strong. Even better to trim the hair that the sugars and bacteria cling to.

On a different thread a while back I made a comment about the hideous toilet stench at the Major Home Improvement Retailer, attributable to fat older men with poor colon management skills. Another commenter suggested that the greasy oily foods that such men are likely to eat will contribute to exceptionally foul fecal odors.
It would be very interested to compare different diets with levels of fecal stench. For example, do people on low-ft diets stink less? What about vegetarians?* Or to the extent that dietary carbohydrates ameliorate fecal odor, do people on Atkins or keto diets smell less than normal.
Inquiring minds want to know.
* = that would be difficult to determine, as women comprise a clear majority of vegetarians and of course women don’t poo

It is mostly amino acids that makes poo stick, so a high protein diet would be worst.
A giant pile of low amino acid cow dung sticks less than a dog pile 3% of its size.

Years ago I remember reading an account of working as a restroom attendant in a very upscale strip club. The author said that he couldn’t last long despite lavish tips, the main reason was that many of the patrons would eat huge meals in a nearby steakhouse and their feces had an unspeakably foul odor.
Though I’m not sure that would account for the stench of the fat old men in the Major Home Improvement Retailer.

It’s the same as animal dung or compost piles. Vegetable matter of one variety with low caloric content means lower odor. A wide variety including lots of meat means higher odor. A dead body smells worse than grass clippings.

Ironically, though, I just met an Indian Jew – a rabbi, as turned out! I didn’t even know he was Jewish, let alone a rabbi! We had a business lunch several weeks ago. I had assumed he was a Pakistani Hindu. The good news is that he had no body odor and was very polite.
