  1. It’s not exactly a surprise though. I just hope the replacement is an immigration hardliner.

  2. Underappreciated element of the Trump/Sessions feud – a culture clash between Trump’s NYC brashness and Sessions’ deep Southern gentility.

    • Not underappreciated.

The bigger clash was Sessions proper impartiality vs. Trump’s win for the team at all costs attitude. Considering what we can expect from the House of Representatives in the next year, Sessions may not be the right man for the job at the right time.

  3. Wasn’t his removal inevitable?

    • Yeah, just waiting for the midterms to be over. That’s normal.

  4. I was worried that Mattis would get dropped. Apparently Bolton is working to make that happen. It may still happen, but I hope not. Bolton is a NeoCon, and Mattis is a super-competent military man who gets things done without bogging the U.S. down in quagmires.

    • Mattis was among those who got Trump to back off from withdrawing from Afghanistan. Non-neocon != paleocon isolationist

      • I’m not saying his policy is perfect. I’m saying it’s far better than most of the other people who might occupy that job. I do think it’s almost impossible to find anyone more capable of carrying out policy.

      • Apparently Bolton is working to make that happen.

Trump loves Bolton because Trump isn’t a paleocon. If Trump isn’t one then paleocon foreign policy will not be implemented by Trump. Deal with the fact paleocons are irrelevant.

    • I read the 2016 editorial by Acting AG Matthew Whitaker on Clinton’s email. At the time he wrote this he was the Executive Director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, whatever that is. (Sounds like a right wing think tank that employees Republican operatives during Democratic administrations.) I also read the FBI report on the their investigation of Clinton email when it came out. The facts that Whitaker claim justify an indictment are not in the FBI report. This editorial is based on made up facts about Clinton’s email. It is a political document, not a legal argument.

  6. Glad that Sessions is gone; big disappointment. With Ds in control of the House, Trump MUST surround himself with loyal hardliners and prepare for war. No more gentility or neocon bullshit or he could very well be removed from office.

    • Only the senate can remove a president from office,. And it takes a 2/3 majority There’s no way that a majority GOP senate will do that as long as Trump remains popular with the base. However, Dems can use their new house majority to muckrake and stir up controversy that could cost Trump and congressional Republicans re-election in 2020. The house has subpeona powers. And they’ll be using it as a political weapon. It will be up to SCOTUS to reign that in.

  8. Even if he was the only guy doing something against illegal migrants, he was mean until the end, for example by specifying he resigned by Trumps demand, giving Dem matter in the Russia probe …

  9. Whitaker is now overseeing the special counsel investigation.

It looks like Trump is getting ready to at least reign in Mueller.

  11. Looks like Bezos will choose New York city as one of the locations for his new headquarters. Now we have Amazon, Google (not headquarters, but a huge presence), Bloomberg and the evil coalition of Morgan/Citi/Goldman/Bank of America/JP Morgan all located in New York. Can’t we get an Attorney General who will go after these entities with every weapon of the anti-trust/SEC arsenal? New York state is generally a lost cause for the Republicans so the President wouldn’t be alienating anybody important. In fact, the upstaters who still elect Republican congressman will applaud the effort; largely, they disdain New York city.

  12. Ryan Faulk has argued repeatedly, similar to what Lion has said but more strongly, that we need a fighter as attorney general, not Jeff Sessions. I think this is too autistic. We need fighters, but we also need a PR strategy. When Democrats do shady things in order to win, they still try to make themselves seem like the good guys. They don’t just say “less jaw-jaw, more war-war”. They do both. Perhaps the ideal AG would be someone who can plausibly claim to be above reproach himself, but also staffs the rest of the Justice department with bareknuckle types, and lets them do their thing. I can’t blame Sessions for attempting the former; the question is how successful was he at the latter?

    • P.S. Sessions will still be in his 70s in 2024. Would make a better successor for Trump than Mike Pence, easily.

    • Sessions would’ve been a fine pick if he had a real hard-headed bulldog running the show behind the scenes, yes. Instead we had a bunch of deep state crony careerist snakes.

What you’re essentially advocating for is a PR man. That has some value but that’s a fraction of the real work that needs to be done. A small one.

  13. Does this guy have a history of immigration patriotism before nov 2016, as Sessions does? Honest question, ive never heard of this guy.

  14. Trumps press conference was painful to watch. Trump and the media are just talking past each other and they are both accusing each other of being divisive. The problem is that the media thinks Trump is too ignorant to understand their Marxist world view. I expect that Trump does understand it he just rejects it as factually wrong. Its easier and more politically correct for Trump to feign ignorance than to actually explain why their misguided belief in “equality” will destroy the country in the long run. But this just leads to a pointless discussion where both sides just get angrier and angrier.

    • “The problem is that the media thinks Trump is too ignorant to understand their Marxist world view.”

Yep. Besides thinking he’s a racist, white nationalist, nazi, authoritarian, they also think he is stupid because Trump doesn’t believe the same things they do.

    • The article I read said she fell a few years ago and recovered from that, but normally when people her age start falling it’s the beginning of the end. Because their bones are brittle they fall and break a hip, wind up bedridden in the hospital, where they contract pneumonia and die.
