Washington state divorce law

Washington is a no-fault divorce community property state. Which means that the Bezos divorce is going to be pretty boring, except for the dollar amounts involved. It doesn’t matter who cheated on whom, the state courts will just equally distribute any property acquired during the marriage. It should be noted that Bezos got married one year before he started Amazon.com, so all of the stock in Amazon.com is community property. 50/50 split. No theatrics. Shares in a publicly traded company are pretty easy to split 50/50. The two parties could argue about the values of Bezos’ various mansions, but they probably won’t. When you’re getting almost 70 billion dollars worth of stock, why worry about whether one mansion is worth a few million more than the other?

By the way, Jeff Bezos graduated from Princeton (electrical engineering and computer science), and then worked in banking and hedge funds, before founding Amazon. He met his wife at the hedge fund where she was a research associate and he was a vice president.

  1. Bezos’ thinking might be on the lines of so what if he has to give up half, its half of a huge amount and there is still more than enough for him in his middle age and old age, un-encumbered by a wife.

    • Thanks for stating the obvious Ed. Yes if you have trillion dollars, you have more options than someone who has 5 dollars. You could even go to a reaaalllllyyyy expensive restaurant. Like the most expensive restaurant in the world lol.

He can think what he wants. He has lost the game.

  2. It’s not going to go 50/50 because billionaire divorces never do. She might try to fight for it, but that would spend more money than it’s worth. Bezos will give her 20 or 30 billion and call it a day. She’ll accept if she’s smart.

If Bezos gives away half, it’s because he wants to.

    • Jeff Bezos has no legal leg to stand on to withhold more than half. 25 years of marriage, and virtually all of the assets accrued occurred after marriage? That’s her money just as much as his.

And don’t discount the notion of a bitter divorce. Either may fight over the china just to make a point.

    • It’s no more his than hers. That’s what marital property means.

  3. The big winner is bill gates who will reclaim his #1 rank on the Forbes 400

    • The Forbes list is very misleading. It typically discusses new money and not old money but in rich people circles how old your money is counts for everything. Real wealth is also held by families and not individuals. Bill Gates doesn’t rank very high in the world of the US elite in fact he was put in his place during the Microsoft anti-trust case which contrary to popular belief was won but lost on appeal largely because Gates got the message and agreed to donate his fortune to philanthropy, wildlife causes, population control, and nature preservation basically causes important to the American ruling class.

      • The biggest winner in all this is president Trump and his allies. Bezos public humiliation and by extension that of the Washington Post is great.

      • Old money has been losing wealth & influence for decades. Why do you think the country has changed so much since the 1950s? New money laughs at old money’s mediocre IQs & dotty eccentricities. If anything gates has increased population by saving thousands of black lives which does nothing to benefit old money. Plus he’s managed to keep $95 billion for himself.

      • They may have been losing wealth and influence but not power. The Anglo-American establishment made their fortunes through tax exemptions, imperialism, colonial monopolies, and privateering. Take John Kerry for example most people don’t take him seriously but in fact he’s a very serious man. His ancestors founded the city of Boston, served as British colonial governors, were members of the Sons of Liberty, and fought as Patriots during the American revolution. People like him are the Boston Brahman and WASP warrior caste who dominate the colonial colleges of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton but especially Yale via Skull and Bones. Later the Robber Barons would be put in their place and made subordinate to old money with Robber Baron types insisting their children marry into old money families as well. Jewish Hollywood scored some big victories against the WASPs and forced open ivy league schools but outside of media power not much has changed. After what occurred to Microsoft and the threat of future regulatory action tech giants have also been put in their place and now give plum and cushy boardroom jobs to old money types.

  4. […] Recently, Jeff Bezos dethroned Bill Gates as the World’s richest human, however Lion of the Blogosphere writes: […]

  5. The divorce will mean that Jeff will have less money to spend on expanding the horizon of humanity (Blue Origin, for example). MacKenzie will probably take her half of the loot and spend it on teaching Africans how to write imaginative fiction.
