Sautéed chicken udon

A week or two ago, Yakov criticized me for reviewing Taco Bell. So here is a more SWPL review.

I bought this from the Korean take-out place, and I enjoyed, although I think it was a little bit too salty. It is also difficult to eat elegantly without risking splattering sauce on your shirt. I think that rice is a more practical base for Asian food.

With tax, it cost $14.10.

Thanks to immigrants, we have so many delicious food choices that didn’t exist in the 1950s. Of course, white people theoretically can cook Asian food, but for some reason, they never bothered to.

* * *

I’m trolling you guys. I’d be happier eating crappy American food for lunch if it meant working at an office where everyone shared my culture, instead of one where 90% of the people were born in another country, many with heavy hard-to-understand accents, some with bad body odor, and I’m like a foreigner in my own country.

  1. This is the standard Yuppie/SWPL take on immigration. It’s all worth it becuase of the wonderful ethnic restaurants, which have delicious food at reasonable prices. They really see the world that way. Their lives are very very sheltered. (I live surrounded by them.)

      • I was eating in my friend’s restaurant, so I asked him if he still has the old cook.
        – No man, I’ve fired him and I’ve promoted his Mexican assistant.
        – She manages?
        – What do you say?
        – I say I can’t believe that she can prepare this. The food is excellent as usual. What she costs?
        – That’s the thing, man. All old cooks were over a $100,000 cash. The last one I’d sponsored for a green card (he’s obviously from the tribe). This one I’ve raised to a $1,000 a week and she is in the sky!
        – Gonna need more money soon though, she has a major talent.
        – We’ll see. She is a single mom with a kid living with her mom and aunt. She still gets all the programs. Who is gonna pay her a $1,000 cash?

I was amazed at the level of cooking and I’m happy for my friend considering the circumstances in which we have to operate because of the damn politicians. But mates, do we need a fascist dictatorship! This is the only thing that can save this poor country.

  3. Immigration is an overlooked cause of the obesity epidemic IMO. So many cheap, delicious takeout spots that cater to all denominators. $14 is a lot for what was probably less than a dollar of ingredients.

    • You’re right. Restaurant food is very high in salt, sugar, butter, fat, calories, etc. All the things that taste good and keep you coming back. Not just fast food but high end restaurants as well. That’s one of the reasons I rarely eat out. Other reasons include cost, lack of privacy and not wanting to subsidize immigration. There’s no telling what kind of diseases some of those illegals handling the food have.

    • Agreed – one thousand percent. The first thing many people say when you tell them we need to cut immigration is, “B-b-but all of those restaurants would shut down!” My reply is, “Where ‘s the downside?” And a lot of ethnic cuisines are not really that delicious. I would much rather have a good hamburger than some Chinese-themed junk food at a buffet. Indian, Mexican and Thai are pretty good; the rest of it is either outright bad or nothing special (the latter being one of two reasons that Cuban food never became popular).

I think of how many great meals my mother cooked for us back home and how those recipes won’t last because people don’t cook as much anymore.

      • On supersize vs superskinny, 90% of the obese participants consume massive amounts of takeout. Usually they order a huge lunch, huge dinner, breakfast is leftovers then they start all over again. It’s a british show so a lot of the ‘takeaway’ is indian food, which apparently includes french fries and onion rings over there.

Quite frankly, the uncivilized Anglo Saxons and their British Isles cousins are perhaps the last remaining barbaric vestiges of the White race. Throughout history, barbarians needed to absorb other barbarians to form a band of cohesion among the more unified, well grounded, and older entities of people.

Other Northern Europeans like the Scandinavians, Germanics and Slavics have already established their unified and well grounded nations. The Anglo Prole Sphere is still up in the air as to what defines it, besides the English language.

It reflects the value that the Founding Fathers and the colonists put on fighting for freedom. This value hasn’t changed. Nothing is more important then the American Revolution, the Founding Fathers and the Constitution. In ompatibility of the masses if immigrants with these values is the problem, not the values themselves.

      • Ethnic Russians are very violent, compared to other whites. It’s an open questions to what extent that is nurture vs. nature. Hundreds of years of serfdom, then the brutality of the Soviet era have created a lot of social dysfunction among working class Russian whites that really is reminiscent of African-American culture – absent fathers, women having children by multiple fathers, strong brutal men are respected, soft intellectual men are despised, having spent time in prison is a badge of honor, belief in conspiracy theories, that sort of thing.

      • “Hundreds of years of serfdom, then the brutality of the Soviet era have created a lot of social dysfunction among working class Russian whites”

Serfdom ended in 1861 right? The Soviet Union ended 29 years ago. Were average Russians (not the Cheka) unusually brutal and violent during either regime? If not, why blame ‘historical forces’ for their alleged brutality? Sounds like historicism.

        Curle

        January 20, 2019 at 11:57 PM

      • I think Russians were always violent. It’s mostly the culture. They are just fine in 1 generation when they immigrate. Akuleyev is right.

        Yakov

        January 21, 2019 at 11:17 AM

      • Serfdom was not a big deal or a bad thing historically. The difficult soil and weather made productive agriculture hard even in the best of times in Russia. Only large farms could be economically viable and kept safe from foreign/domestic threats. Unlike today the average workday was like five hours and people got to enjoy themselves with friends/family. The church also served people’s needs, argued on their behalf, and could petition the sovereign directly.

Russia was also an Enlightenment power which suggests her development was far superior compared to most Europeans. Not all Enlightenment was based on Locke and Rousseau but also Hobbes and Voltaire.

The dysfunction you’re describing is common to many industrialized societies and also a product of the Soviet collapse. Russia has just now regained the economic position she had in the late Soviet period.

You’re right that Russia isn’t European she’s Scandinavian at her core with Viking blood. Some might even argue the entire Soviet epoch was the real Russia asserting itself and destroying all that was European which was artificially imposed on her.

That’s because you have a prole job. If you work in management consulting, investment banking or at a white shoe law firm the office is mostly white. BigLaw is 11% Asian (which is still significant Asian overrepresentation, no matter what talking heads may say). NAMs? Not very many of those, but I think Lion is annoyed at Indians, not NAMs.

NGOs are pretty white, but the minorities there are mostly NAMs.

Plus, political climate matters. Only 64% of financial analysts, 71% of engineers, and 73% of lawyers are Democrats. Medicine is 53% Democrat, mostly thanks to the efforts of surgeons, who are collectively Republican and very loud about it. If you want to know how fucked the political situation is, all the crazy stories about diversity in Silicon Valley or Wall Street represent the *moderates*. The NGO world is 93% Democrat, and mostly the craziest kind.

‘But they say the same about Jews’.

You gotta compare applese to apples. Jews, who work in IT, where I’d interacted with the Indians, are not like that. In other fields like law, politics, journalism, entertainment, bussines, which are occupations requiring all these traits to succeed, I don’t see why that wouldn’t be true, especially given the Jews’ high IQ and overall abilities.

I’ve just read a good book about Israel’s right wing prime ministers by Arieh Eldad: ‘דברים שרואים מכאן’. Not available in English. It examines the question why the righr wing leaders had moved to the left once elected and had pursued policies opposed by their electorate. Except for Itzhak Shamir, who did what he had promised his voters, the rest were scum. I would remove Begin from power and shot everyone else. But that’s the nature of their occupation. Politician = traitor, lier, thief, you name it – the lowest of the low. Shamir was that exception that proves the rule.

I would ban the Jews from politics, law and finance, because I think that their overall contribution to these fields is negative. The Jews should be in medicine, science, engineering, trades – there they make a positive contribution to the world.

I’ve always wondered if it was because law enforcement attracts people with this personality or if it changes their personality to be like this.

Also, people despise certain professions and businesses such as politicians, lawyers, lenders, credit card companies, wall street, etc. and respect other professions such as doctors, scientists and engineers. I don’t know whether those professions/businesses attract certain types of people or make them that way. But I agree that certain professions and businesses tend to be sneaky. Not that everyone in those professions and businesses is like that. But I think the stereotypes have merit.

I don’t ascribe double crossing to high IQ, but to occupations that by their very nature are border line criminal in the best cases. High IQ and other genetic trates give Jews an advantage when it’s apples to apples.

I want to see 3rd and 4th generation assimilated Indians, before I can have an opinion to what extend it’s genetic or cultural. As Jayman always says: ‘Where does the culture come from?’ Im not sure at this time.

As far as Armenians, in the USSR they were one notch above Jews as far as being liked. I personally have never had a bad expirience with them. They are a talented and capable race.

But most Indians aren’t Brahmins. They are a mixed bag, coming from such a large and diverse population. Most Indians would generally be happy to see their child marry a white person, if not totally psyched. Some Indians even see whites as their distant cousins, even though that is mostly inaccurate.

    • “Why is it so hard for you to work around people who don’t share your culture? Are you otherwise very lonely? ”

It would be easier to take the question seriously without the obvious slight that follows it. But ‘culture’ does not just mean wearing funny hats on your Holy Day, or jumping around ullulating on your National Liberation Day–vibrant as those things may be, it can also mean many, many different standards of behaviour regarding ettitquete, personal space, interaction betwen sexes, using other people’s stuff, the kind of things that strangers can and cannot discuss, sense of humour, shared history and values, and just feeling like you are on the same wavelength.

On top of all this, which can be draining, there is the added burden on the white person that they have to navigate this potential minefield without the minority ever cottoning on that they may be causing offence or irritation. Because whereas a white person causing a minority offence and irritation is proof that the white person is racist, a white person feeling irritated and offended by a minority is also proof of the white person’s racism.

For example, in IT it’s absolutly crucial not to hide problems. There is nothing that I hate more than that. These cowardly, sneaky bastards would do exactly that and then deny responsibility. They come from a different society and are afraid to get fired, I get it, but why the hell do I need them? Why do I have to find out from the users, when the problem is known in the IT?

Who will get their hands bloody to build these spectacular metal glass towers so someone could live in luxury?

    • First class buildings like this are built with union labor, so worker compensation is decent, but move away from first-class construction, take a walk along the Hudson littoral, and traverse the streets inland, go from Greenpoint to Astoria, there are 100s, 1000s of buildings put up over the past 15 years and very few to none used union labor, not for excavation, iron work, concrete, wall board, electricity, plumbing, nothing. Those workers were paid a NYC subsistence wage. And this is just fine with your betters. This is the America that they want.

    • A related phenomenon is that nowadays people will ask you “what’s your favorite kind of food?” and expect an “ethnic” reply. I want to reply, “uh, just a ‘nice’ restaurant that serves finely prepared, you know, Western European-based food,” but we seem to lack a concise word or phrase to describe this. I have the vague impression that when I was growing up in the eighties, people used the phrase “gourmet restaurant.” In any event, if you don’t answer with the expected Thai, Mexican, Indian, or whatever, you reveal yourself as a racist deplorable.

Huh? “French” or “Italian” is not concise enough for you? There’s nothing controversial about saying Italian, a Western European based food, is one’s favorite food, and that would probably be the top or among the top choices for favorite kind of food in the US. Scandinavian food is trendy, and Spanish cuisine is considered somewhat exotic still. Besides these, you’re basically left with British or German food among Western European cuisines, in which case, if either was your favorite, you’d just say that British or German food are your favorite, since “Western European based food” typically doesn’t refer to British or German cuisine. People typically think of French and Italian.

  20. OT: NYT, 01/18/19 – U.N.C. Admissions Lawsuit Brings Another Attack on Affirmative Action

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill weighs race so heavily in its admissions process that it is the predominant factor in determining whether many black and Hispanic students get in, according to court papers filed on Friday by an anti-affirmative action group that is also suing Harvard.

The group, Students for Fair Admissions, says the university is excluding white and Asian applicants in favor of less qualified black and Hispanic students.

The plaintiffs accuse U.N.C., a public flagship university, of using race “at every stage” of the admissions process, in violation of the law, “even when the application gives no indication that race affected the student’s life in any way.”

“This is wrong,” the university said in a brief in its defense, also filed Friday. An applicant’s race does not provide an automatic boost or guarantee admission, the university said. Rather, “This factor, like all others, is always considered in the context of everything else known about a candidate and in light of the range of contributions the candidate might make to the University.”

The case has many similarities to a deeply divisive lawsuit that Students for Fair Admissions brought against Harvard, leading to a hard-fought trial last fall and a national conversation over the role of race in college admissions.

But unlike the Harvard case, which focused on whether the university was particularly unfair to one minority group, Asian-Americans, the U.N.C. case is more akin to high-profile affirmative action suits of the past, which accused schools of favoring black and Hispanic students over others.

The cases are also somewhat different in legal approaches. The plaintiffs accuse Harvard of violating federal civil rights law, and U.N.C. of violating civil rights law and the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. Both lawsuits were tailored to reach the Supreme Court, and they amount to a two-pronged attack that maximizes the chances for a hearing.

Originally filed in 2014, both suits were engineered by Edward Blum, a conservative activist who opposes racial preferences. At this point it is a tossup which of the cases will reach the high court first. It is possible that if one gets there first, the Supreme Court could decide to call up the other as well, lawyers said. …

Agriculture is one of the most important things we have, yet no one here, including me, knows @#$ about it. The breezy talk about robots doing everything is ignorant and insulting.

Isn’t he talking about operational efficiency?

I’ve noticed it flying to Gatwick from US. Land at Gatwick and you get off the plane turn a corner and you are at a big well staffed and efficient customs checkpoint. Customs moves fast and you turn another corner and there is a line of express buses taking you to any major city in the country. You can be on the road to your destination in less time than it takes to get through customs at Houston International. Compare that to Atlanta International. To connect to Amtrak you have to take subway to a location about 10 blocks from the station, wait for a bus or walk the 10 blocks with your luggage (or hope for a taxi). Once at Amtrak you are in a facility that resembles a welfare office in Johannesburg.

      • Here’s his original piece, dated Dec. 23, 2008. Friedman describes “Hong Kong’s ultramodern airport after riding out there from downtown on a sleek high-speed train — with wireless connectivity that was so good I was able to surf the Web the whole way on my laptop.” Then says of JFK that it has an “ugly, low-ceilinged arrival hall was cramped, and using a luggage cart cost $3.”

My post is that popular culture, from The Jetsons to Back to the Future, from Dick Tracy to Buck Rogers, from Roert Heinlein to Philip K. Dick, is a major influence on how people expect the future to be. It may seem obvious, but its impact is so persavise that we see it as normal.

      • Do the Jetsons actually live on Earth? Do they ever go down to the surface? I would wonder about this occasionally when I saw the show as a child.

Most people’s conception of future technology is based on the implicit assumption there will be a lot of white men to invent things, which will not be the case. The future will be less Jetsons and more gradual decline, simply on the basis of demographics.

    • In SF there’s a hugely popular pizza/Italian joint which opened, under another name, in 1958. The owner, who bought the place in the ’80’s from the founder, told me that for the first couole of years, the founder, despite being in a prime neighborhood location, just sat around with no business coming in. Then all of a sudden pizza exploded, and the guy had to stay open till 3:a.m. every night. Later, he cut back to 1:a.m. I’ll never forget being in there around ’02-04, seated next to a bunch of 20-something SWPL’s and one of them yells, “this place rocks!” Woody Allen shot part of Blue something-or-other there. Anyway, the way my friend came to own the place is tgat he was a captain at one of SF’s famous “Continental” restaurants (frog legs and such). Tastes changed and that place closed.
