Blackfacegate gets worse!

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/virginia-ag-mark-herring-admits-wearing-blackface-at-1980-college-party

Even I’ve never dressed up in blackface, and I’m a “racist” according to SJW types. But for some weird reason, it was a thing for all these liberal Democrats in Virginia.

  1. Is it safe to say that if this keeps up, a Republican will be governor of Virginia?

    • Unlikely. Dem’s will probably decide that the two white men have to resign, but the black man can stay.

      • Fairfax has the woman herself sitting there crying on camera. Difficult to see how he’s going to sweep that under the rug.

And the funny thing is, it doesn’t even matter if she or he is telling the truth. The standard is no longer “did he commit a crime?”, it’s “was he insensitive?” Sleeping with a woman and not calling her is much more insensitive and hurtful than wearing blackface to a party. If Northam and Herring have hurt all black people every where with their insensitive costumes that appropriate black bodies, then clearly Fairfax has insulted me personally with his use of that poor woman’s body as a sex object, and I don’t see why I should be expected to put up with it!

      • People with skeletons in their closet shouldn’t run for office. Now, that’s not the worst skeleton in the world. But, given the climate, he had to have known it would come out eventually. So he should have been prepared for it. But, boy, did he botch his response!

This was one of those situations where the way someone handles the scandal is more important than the scandal itself. It also didn’t help that it coincided with some outrageous comments concerning killing babies. He should have immediately called in some PR experts to help manage it.

      • > it coincided with some outrageous comments concerning killing babies

The black face thing was obviously deliberately ginned up and hyped by the media to bury the infanticide discussion. The left does not want conversations about third trimester and late term abortions in the media at all because the vast majority of people find that disgusting, and it complicates the “right to choose/my body” narrative.

      • Governor Northam is unlikely to give up his seat without fight. Expect an ugly sh!tfest between the old guard, “real” Democrats and the democratic brats like Ocasio Cortez.

        Ok, what, who's this again?

February 6, 2019 at EDT pm

      • I agree with bobbybobbob but instead of having to say that I would prefer a simple vote up/down system in the comment section but Lion has rightly stated that would incentivize conformist comments.

      • Any forum or discussion section with “likes” or up/down voting is automatically garbage. It’s a bad idea from the late 90s that obviously doesn’t work that people still try. Trustworthy editorial control with understood biases is the only thing that works. I think the pendulum will swing back towards blogs, private forums, and newsletters with an editorial voice. It is the only thing that can possibly work against AI bots and huge corporate and international interests.

There were headlines about reddit raising a multi billion round. What can they possibly do with the money? It’s ridiculous. Running a website costs peanuts now. It’s obviously about perfecting sponsored propaganda. But as they tighten that grip, it flows away between their fingers. Only half of people are dumb, and they tend not to be involved with text. Most people interested in text on the internet will go back to blogs and listservs. The powers love TV because it sways dumb people very easily. They’re still figuring out how to deal with rapid spread of ideas over the internet among highly literate and often multi-lingual people.

You see the dynamic on twitter: They are simultaneously yearning for totalitarian leftist control but also know they can’t ban the right or it would just be boring.

I’d have agreed until the “f*** that b*****” story. He’s finished.

“People with skeletons in their closet shouldn’t run for office.”

It pretty clearly wasn’t a skeleton at the time. The trouble with these things is you can’t know in advance where the goalposts are going to end up.

      • I think it is is important to remember that most of this isn’t even “blackface”. Blackface is a caricature of black people associated with old minstrel shows. Gov. Northam says he blackened his skin to play Michael Jackson. The AG did it to play a rapper*. That isn’t really blackface. If you are white, and going as MJ, you either need a mask or paint. To this day, it is common for kids to don black paint to dress as a black character or reddish brown paint to play an Indian. I’ve seen both in recent years at Halloween Festivals, and nobody gets upset about it, so the idea it would have been offensive in the 1980’s or 90’s or 2000’s is absurd.

*Probably as Flavor Flav, who was pretty much a walking, breathing minstrel show himself. Consider please that the same people complaining about blackface and its association with minstrel acts chose this woman to be the lead performer at the Grammy Awards and nominated her for 5 Awards (video fast becomes NSFW so don’t play if you are at work but this song and video is one from an album the Grammy Awards deemed worthy of “Album of the Year”:

BUT, Cardi B’s lyrics to Twerk are height of artistic grace, excerpt below:

“Suck up on that click until that pussy got a hickie baby
…… And that asshole got a little frame on it
Pussy so good he got my name on it”

I listened to my share of suggestible lyrics when I was young, but women like Cardi B needs to be dumped into a tank with hungry sharks.

  5. Ah, 1980. What a time. The 60s had run its course and the PC era hadn’t begun. I imagine there was some good-natured pushback by southern boys against northern pieties. It was “racism” but not really.

I worked in the south back then and it seemed like racial relations were in fact settled and polite. We worked together but lived in separate worlds. I heard the N word more often in Montana.

Not that an SJW would buy any of that.

      • “But blackface and minstrel shows were still primarily a northeastern phenomenon”

The inception of these shows began in the northeastern cities like NYC, and then they dissipated, only to be taken up in other regions like the South during the Civil War.

        From your wiki link:

“Minstrelsy lost popularity during the war. New entertainments such as variety shows, musical comedies and vaudeville appeared in the North, backed by master promoters like P. T. Barnum who wooed audiences away. Blackface troupes responded by traveling farther and farther afield, with their primary base now in the South and Midwest

        Ok, what, who's this again?

February 7, 2019 at EDT pm

      • I’ve seen the New York Metropolitan Opera perform several times. But I’ve never been to New York. Will you now claim that the Met is a “redneck” thing? If opera became less popular in NY and the Met started performing more shows in other areas to make up the deficit would you claim that opera was a southern or midwest thing? Of course not. Blackface and minstrel shows were Broadway theater. That some of those shows traveled and performed in other parts of the country doesn’t change that.

Chasing one off just means it got tired of fighting and went to look for an easier meal. Strangling one takes it to a whole ‘nother level.
