The Orville S03E08 “Identity, Part 1”

I just got around to watching.

Holy! That was totally unexpected.

* * *

I think this is the best episode of The Orville up to this point in the series, so I should write some more. Spoilers ahead.

The Florida prostitution news story

The NY Times:

“I would never consider them prostitutes — it was really a rescue operation,” the sheriff said, training his anger at the men whose demand for sex kept the massage parlors in business. “The monsters are the men,” he added.

The world’s nerdiest wedding

Has anyone actually purchased this service, or is it just a publicity stunt to get more people to play the game?

Jussie Smollett written out of last 2 episodes, but NOT fired

From Fox News:

Jussie Smollett’s character has been removed from the final two episodes of the upcoming season of Fox’s “Empire,” the show’s executives said Friday.

“The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us. Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years and we care about him deeply. While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out,” co-creators Lee Daniels and Brett Mahoney and executive producers Danny Strong, Brian Grazer, Sanaa Hamri, Francie Calfo and Dennis Hammer told Fox News.

“We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show and to avoid further disruption on set, we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season,” the statement continued.

Big media was so quick to fire Roseanne Barr for a dumb but legal tweet, but only reluctantly does Fox write Jussie out of two episodes, with the implication that they hope he only gets a slap on the wrist so they can use him next season.

Did NYC really lose 25,000 jobs because Amazon bailed?

Everyone wants to be in New York City, but they are prevented from moving here because there isn’t enough office and residential space to hold them.

(I already can sense a comment coming. “Lion, you moron, not everyone wants to move to New York City, I certainly want nothing to do with the hellhole.” It’s rhetorical hyperbole, something that Trump does just about every time he opens his mouth.)

All NYC has to do to attract 25,000 jobs is zone the same area in Queens so developers can build a bunch of huge buildings without the normal massive amounts of red tape. Proponents of the Hudson Yards project claim it will bring 55,000 new jobs, more than twice as many jobs as Amazon was offering up. In New York City, “build it and they will come” is completely true.

Smollett still insists he’s innocent. Unbelievable

CNN reports:

Jussie Smollett apologized to the cast and crew of “Empire” on Thursday night for any embarrassment the recent allegations may have caused, but he maintained that he was innocent, a person at the meeting told CNN.

The person at the meeting said they were shocked and dismayed that Smollett stuck to his story of innocence. For the most part, the source said, Smollett paraphrased what was in the statement that his attorney put out that afternoon, blaming the legal system and the media for his woes.

What an incalcitrant liar. Of course it would be a bad legal strategy to admit guilt, but he could say that his lawyers advised him not to talk about the matter, which would surely be the truth if he has competent lawyers.

If Smollett is willing to lie to get out of his predicament, I am surprised that he’s not using the most obvious lie, that the bodybuilders beat him up because they were pissed at him for some reason, and he didn’t recognize them because they were wearing ski masks. It least that lie would have some plausibility.

Catholicism’s gay priest problem

Authorities solemnly tell us that gays are no more likely to sexually abuse children than heterosexuals, but then we look at the Catholic Church, and you hardly ever hear about heterosexual priests taking advantage of girls, it’s always about the homosexual male priests abusing boys.

(1) Heterosexual priests are more likely to have joined the clergy for the right reason, because they feel the calling of the Holy Spirit, and therefore they take their vows more seriously. But the gays usually join the clergy for the wrong reason, because it gives them a socially acceptable (within the Catholic community) reason for not being interested in girls. And then they get cloistered with a bunch of other gays, and gay sex inevitably happens.

(2) Catholicism also forbids porn and masturbation. This is unfortunate. If the gay priests were jacking off to gay porn, then they’d satiate themselves that way and wouldn’t succumb to the urge to molest Catholic boys.

The only solution for Catholicism is to abolish this celibacy nonsense and allow priests to marry. (I have no idea if this is religiously viable.)

Jussie Smollett under arrest!

But unlike with Roger Stone, they didn’t call in the SWAT team. It appears he was allowed to turn himself in voluntarily.

Hire diversity or lose clients

This article is three weeks old, but I must have missed it three weeks ago.

I found this especially interesting:

A group of general counsels, the people who hire elite law firms, began discussing how to respond. They later published an open letter, signed by officials at companies like Lyft, Heineken USA and Booz Allen Hamilton, calling on firms like Paul, Weiss “to reflect the diversity of the legal community” or they would send their business elsewhere.

So big law firms need diversity in order not to lose big clients!

I think this demonstrates that big corporations have drunk the Kool-Aid and are not just doing the minimum possible to avoid being sued for discrimination.
