More free speech in Russian than New Zealand

with 55 comments

New York Times reports:

One man, Philip Neville Arps, appeared in court in Christchurch on Wednesday on two charges related to reposting the killer’s video. Mr. Arps was denied bail and is facing almost a month in custody until his next court appearance.

A Christchurch teenager, whose name has not been released, was denied bail on Monday over charges that he had posted a photograph of Al Noor Mosque, one of the two that were attacked, a week before the shootings, with the caption “target acquired.” He was also charged with reposting the video.

Each could spend as much as 14 years in jail if found guilty.

Up to 14 years in prison for sharing a newsworthy (albeit macabre) video. Sounds like a totalitarian police state, not a democracy.

  1. On the Canadian site Blazingcatfur we joke about being put in a gulag for impure thoughts. It’s getting so it is not funny anymore. We all thought the UK was furthest down this road but New Zealand came out of nowhere and has jumped ahead of the UK.

    • I definitely thought the UK was the worst too. You know, people make fun of us here (in Canada) but legitimately a lot of the best stuff from US culture-of-freedom makes its way across the border and I think we will probably be second-last-man-standing in the Anglosphere.

  2. It kind of sounds like they might have known about the shooting before hand and are thus accessories to the crime.

The second is not being charged with being an accessory either, though he will be investigated.

  3. My guess is that the politicians and police are scared they’ll be blamed for this having happened on their watch. So they’re going overboard and making an example of these guys to avoid criticism.

If he was part of an online group that the shooter was in, then this looks like incitement.

Incitement is not protected speech even in the US. Given that imminent violence DID in fact quickly ensue specifically at that mosque, you could make a pretty good case that incitement occurred, if the shooter saw those comments online.

From Wiki, related to US limits on the 1st Amendment

    “Incitement
The Supreme Court has held that “advocacy of the use of force” is unprotected when it is “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action” and is “likely to incite or produce such action”.”

    • Dan is right.

If the kid had posted a pictureof all the mosque in Jerusalem, as a symbol of Islam, that would have been different. But the fact that he posted a picture of this particular mosque makes it different.

This reminds me a lot of the crackdowns on Free speech during World War I. Google Eugene Debs and the sedition act of 1918.

    Dan

March 22, 2019 at EDT pm

    • Yeah…

      The video is fake.

It is comparable to a cut-scene from Call of Duty.

March 22, 2019 at EDT pm

    • I saw it. The video was much milder than what you’d expect. Not only was it from a distance but 223 is a very small, fast bullet that pokes tiny holes with very little blood. And there was hardly any running or screaming, either. Honestly, he might as well have been shooting sandbags from 100 feet way. It certainly wasn’t good. But anyone who had trouble watching it must be very fragile.

      • Go to 8:56. Watch the shell casings disappear into thin air.

Go to 9:41. Wait until he starts shooting down the alleyway. Notice how the music turns off when he starts firing and then turns back on when he stops.

How is this possible in a livestream? Is he wearing a radio on his back?

        map

      • Destructure,

No, the 223 is very deadly.

You would have blood everywhere after that hit.

That is why the video is fake.

        map

March 23, 2019 at EDT pm

      • The shell casings do seem to disappear. So I slowed the speed down and caught a glimpse of several cases reappear in flight further away. If you look closely you can even see a few small dots appear on the pavement near where you’d expect them to land. I think it has something to do with the focus. Notice that the license plates are also too blurry to read even though he’s standing right in front of them. And 223 cases are a lot smaller than license plate numbers.

As for the music, he had it cranked up and wasn’t that far. So it’s not surprising to hear it. Nor is it surprising that the music disappears when he shoots. Most microphones aren’t designed to handle sounds that loud. I would have expected his mic to have a clipping circuit or something. But I guess it just cuts the mic off altogether.

March 23, 2019 at EDT pm

      • Destructure,

Look at the background of the casings as they fall toward the white fence. Some of the casings do exit to the side, but many fall with the white fence as the background. Notice how they disappear in the air. You should see something bouncing off the ground near the white fence as the bullet lands, but you don’t. This is a big problem.

        As for the music:

At 9:41, you see him hanging around the Subaru with the music playing. Then he makes a right, past the entrance of the mosque, to the adjoining alley. Notice how the music gets quieter but then swells in volume. This is not a natural effect. The volume then stabilizes and cuts off when he starts shooting. The background music goes dead quiet. How? This is not a doppler effect. Notice also how the music swells in volume when he runs back into the mosque.

One more example: the part where he shoots the woman outside in front of his vehicle. Notice the object shooting from the top of her head: that is a bloodpack. Also, notice how when he drives off, the vehicle does not even bounce a little bit, as if there was no body in front of the vehicle (like running over a small speed bump.)

Again, look at the shooting indoors. You would expect to see at least some bullets hitting the wall. Yet, none seem to. There is also an example of someone getting shot as they exit to the right of the building when the shooter fires into the room on the right. If the guy did not escape, then there should be a body in the alley by the shooter’s car. There was none. If he did escape, then where was the police response to the active shooter?

      • I didn’t say the 223 wasn’t deadly. I said it poked tiny holes with very little blood. And that’s what the gelatin video shows. What you see internally is an impressive hydrostatic shock. But what you see externally is small holes. That’s been my experience in the field, as well.

We already know both the causes of both Islamic terrorism in the West and its white counter-reaction. The answer is the removal of Islam from West and the mindset that brought it here.

To paraphrase Tonly Blair: tough on terrorism, tough on the causes of terrorism.

Regardless of political viewpoint, the former understand that intentionality means absolutely nothing in the world.

I find it ironic that as NZ welcomes the Third World horde, it recently passed a measure to prevent foreigners from acquiring real estate. No doubt this is to target white Americans, Europeans, and Australians, and there will be a wink and a nod for other.

The only New Zealand woman I can think of besides the prime minister is Rod Stewart’s wife. Being a famous model, of course she was beautiful, but in that slightly sterile, unsexy way all supermodels are.

Since neither the Russians nor the Chinese are deliberately trying to replace their native populations with foreigners, their programs automatically occupy the moral high ground. Same applies to their treatment of “lawyers” and “journalists” and “aliens.”

The same cannot be said for New Zealand.

      • Peter Akuleyev is a very devious person and a good example of the Russian fifth column. Most non-Russians/Slavics arrived in Russia during the 1990s during the Russian Weimar Republic period an era of history that is thankfully over but one which he no doubt celebrated. Russia is under attack both in the physical arena over land, territory, borders, and war but also the information space. I fully support the Russian crackdown on fake news and traitors like him. It’s also a myth that Russia’s best and brightest left for London more like its most worthless and parasitical. Good riddance too.

Journalists who challenge the powers that be in America like Gary Webb and Michael Hastings also die under mysterious circumstances but you won’t hear much about them. The scum who was thrown out of a window was a US/UK intelligence asset whose reporting led to the deaths of dozens perhaps hundreds of Russian mercenary soldiers. Good riddance to him too.

  14. Largely forgotten fact, in the early mid-nineties New Zealand went broke, as in stone cold dead broke. Don’t ask me how this happened given that countries have the option of carrying large deficits year after year, but NZ did legitimately go broke. In the intervening decades the country recovered and carved out a place for itself as a socialist paradise, where the Maori culture seemingly has been given pride of place, quite unlike nasty brutish Australia across the water, who are mean as hell to their Aborigines. I suspect given its insignificance in the world, NZ defines itself in contrast to Australia, Aussies bad right wingers, Kiwis nice fuzzy lefties. The crack down on free speech works to burnish it’s progressive credentials of course. I remember watching 60 Minutes (or some such) 10, 12 years ago and there was an episode about the Netherlands and how at the time many whites there were wanting to migrate out of the country ostensibly because of tensions caused by the Muslims in the Netherlands. A young white couple being interviewed for the show said they were moving to NZ because they viewed it as a sort of primordial paradise. I wonder what became of them.
