This anti-Buttigieg op-ed shows why he’s such a strong candidate

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/apr/16/pete-buttigieg-democrats-flavour-month

The op-ed writer complains that he doesn’t stand for anything, and that’s exactly it. He’s not a crazed extreme-leftist. He’s a Bill Clinton type of Democrat, minus his extreme lust for women.

In a pack of potential candidates who are angry women and minorities, crazed extreme-leftists, there stands only one sane moderate white male who is not about to drop dead from old age, and that’s our gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, whose gayness protects him from #metoo.

Picking a fight with Mike Pence shows how Buttigieg has learned from the Trump playbook. It gets his name in the news, and rallies the Pence-haters in the party (and especially in the fakestream media) who otherwise wouldn’t have thought much about Buttigieg.

  1. I see a lot of lefty middle-aged women on my Facebook feed getting increasingly angry at Buttigieg. Which is probably a sign they are scared of him and know he is going to sink the Kamala Harris candidacy they want so badly. Weird sign of the times that being gay is the only way for a white male military veteran to get the liberal female vote these days. Buttigieg is a smart strategist, I wonder if he actually even is gay.

  3. If all the right can come up with are butt jokes and ‘he’s gay’ then they have a problem. Your HBD aware readers should be able to recognize this guy is highly, highly intelligent. I don’t think trump is as dumb as is generally propounded here, but the gay mayor’s IQ could probably eat trump’s IQ for breakfast.

Remember he’s probably been hearing butt jokes since kindergarten. I’ll be interested to see trump’s nickname for this guy.

He could still be metooed if he was pervy with young men, or if he had a ‘confused’ period where he fraternized with females.

So I don’t think he’s seriously running for president. He’s running for power. This gets his name out there and increases his clout. Being “highly, highly smart” will not even necessarily make him a better presidential candidate, because it turns off a lot of voters.

Only upper middle class white Democrats care how “smart” their president is. And they will consider whatever Democrat wins the nomination (or the election) to be “smart” regardless of how smart he or she actually is (just like they’ll consider the Republican axiomatically stupid, regardless of how smart he actually is).

      • There’s absolutely nothing “black” about Barack Obama.

He’s spent ZERO time around rank-and-file black folks in his life and it’s pretty clear that he only married Michelle to give racial credibility to his political aspirations as he knew that the optics of being married to a white woman would be troublesome with his voting base in the future.

Kamala Harris does have one very black quality – the eternal anger and chip on her shoulder, as well as the ability to see the whole universe as revolving around herself. Obama didn’t have that weakness, he was raised solely by white people. (and a few Asians) Obama’s lack of the black entitlement attitude is exactly what made him electable, safe, wholesome and sanitary for white voters eager to prove how racist they weren’t.

        Camlost

April 17, 2019 at EDT am

      • I am VERY puzzled by Harris’s racial identification. If she were half-black and half-white it would entirely understandable for her to identify as completely black, what with the One Drop Rule. Except she is not white at all, her mother was from India. The One Drop Rule applies only to black-white mixes, not to mixes of black and some other minority. Nonetheless, Harris identifies solely as black, and it’s not some cynical attempt to appeal to black voters because she had always done so. It’s even stranger because at least to me she looks much more Indian than black.

      • Black trumps everything in American social politics. When Tiger Woods called himself “Caublinasian” that was considered kind of weird; people didn’t expect him to place equal weight on the non-black sides of himself. Kamala Harris is 11 years older than Woods and far less imaginative, so it’s not surprising she’d have a more conservative view of her identity.

        Richard

April 17, 2019 at EDT pm

      • In a sense, blackness exists on a spectrum. Jesse Jackson is blacker than Obama, who is blacker than Kamala. This is based on a combination of characteristically black features: physical, cultural, social, linguistic. But in another sense, being black is binary. The only judge of one’s blackness that anyone cares about is the black community. They accepted Obama as black, so he’s black. You don’t hear any blacks saying now, “He wasn’t very black”. But it took them time to accept him; it wasn’t clear he would dominate the black vote at first.

This piece is an interesting time warp from back when blacks were debating if Obama was black enough:
        http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1584736,00.html

My opinion has been that blacks will end up accepting the blackest candidate as black, and once that consensus is reached, the decision is binary, and it’s as if she were fully black the whole time. I’m open to the alternative view, which is that below some threshold of blackness, this is tough to pull off and blacks see you as some sort of nonwhite exotic, but not black.

All of this will be tested in the South Carolina primary, and it will have big implications for the racial composition of our future presidents.

  15. Mayor Whats-His-Name only refrains from acting like “a crazed extreme-leftist” and only appears “moderate.” His policy positions aren’t significantly different from those of Harris or Booker. For that matter, he would not govern any more as a “moderate” than Bernie Sanders would – even Sanders is not going to institute “socialism” or confiscate the wealth of his donors (or even Hillary’s donors).

  16. First, Altuve’s posted a 181 in 17 games so far. Second, yes, Mayor Pete would be more qualified to invoke aid than Sen. Harris. Third, how did you know I’m a sabermetrics buff?

    • Hey, nice catch on that 1990 NYT environmentalist piece you posted at Sailer. I sent it around.

      • I read that as a high-schooler, Before that I was in favor of the resurgent environmentalism, due to the Exxon spill, hypodermic needles washing up on the Shore, and the ozone layer hubbub. I’m still in favor of being a good steward of the planet, but this article made me more skeptical of self-proclaimed earth saviors.

  17. I don’t think much of his chances: he is short and ectomorphic, like many men with ancestry from southern Europe. Not as small or swarthy as Dukakis, but still. I think he is ‘running’ for the VP slot.

  19. All of it’s academic until you see him kissing his boyfriend, partner, husband, whatever. No way he’ll be elected beyond what he is now if that happens. Very few, and that excludes even some gays, want to see men publicly kissing each other.

  20. Woah, finally saw a couple video clips of him today. I’d never even seen him before. Zero gravitas. He looks like the intern that brings in the coffee tray and makes sure the all the remote sites are muted before the teleconference starts.

No way he’ll look Presidential standing on a big, empty stage next to Trump.

Surprised you haven’t mentioned this aspect, LoTB.

  22. “The op-ed writer complains that he doesn’t stand for anything, and that’s exactly it. He’s not a crazed extreme-leftist.”

Don’t be so sure. A guy as smart as Peter Butt — and he is very smart — is smart enough to play it cool. But his father was an extreme far left radical. And the apple usually doesn’t fall far from the tree. #Gramsci

  24. Except for being gay, which isn’t a moral failing anyway, is there anything objectionable about Buttigieg at all?

Normally I like my candidates a bit older (for being wiser), but Democrats are also insane anyway, so who cares? Only Tulsi Gabbard seems like a normal, competent candidate with a decent intelligence, but she’s polling at 1%, so she’s without any chance.

I agree with Lion, this guy might not be the worst of the bunch. I couldn’t care less that he’s gay or whatever

      • He’s probably a gramscian. His father was a founding member and president of the International Gramsci Society. That’s some far left, radical stuff along the lines of the Frankfurt School. So much so that I’d consider any of the early people and organizations pushing Peter Butt to be highly suspect themselves.

  25. if what you’re saying is true, then it doesn’t have anything to do with Harris. It has to do with the fact that lefty middle-aged women really don’t like gays. They may pretend to but underneath It all they do not. They hate the idea of the first husband in the White House. The biggest jumps for this whole first lady called are middle class white women, left right and Center. the only women who don’t like the cult of the first lady are the hardcore left us to infest our major media.

these women may never say it, but underneath It All they realize that the greatest power women have is power over their husbands. not to have a first lady in the White House would represent a huge symbolic and substantive loss. That’s why they don’t like buttegieg.

I don’t think Mr Butt is doing his part to help grow the population.

The thing that irritates me about these clowns who say immigration spurs job growth is that those jobs usually go to the immigrants themselves. It does nothing to increase jobs for the native born population. It just drives down wages and salaries at the same time it drives up cost of living, housing prices, etc.
