First end-of-July debate night

I did not watch, but they say Warren “won.”

I’m in favor of Medicare-for-all because Obamacare sucks, and not having anything sucks, but “decriminalizing” crossing the border, how is that different than open borders? Hundreds of millions can cross the decriminalized border and get free healthcare? Who will pay for that? Where will those hundreds of millions live? What happens when there are no jobs for hundreds of millions of unskilled non-English-speaking people? There’s only so much seasonal farm work.

  1. M4A will become impossible if the invasion continues. At some point people with money will have no interest in paying big bucks to help folks ho don’t look like them. If M4A isn’t passed in the next few years it never will be. The social cohesion we need for it won’t be there.

Another reason to keep them out. It’s nice having a decent social safety net.

  3. When you have people who live in places like our hometowns of Manhattan and the Westchester suburb north of us, this is the kind of virtue signalling behavior that one finds among these politicos.

Now Trump seems like an outlier, despite being a Manhattanite and having properties in Westchester?

21st century politics are for stupid people in the digital age of post-scarcity.

blacks and proles are faring no worse or better under Obama or Trump. If anything, proles who have made a mint from Democratic policies that allows them to do business with the Chinese are probably suffering from the trade tariffs imposed by Trump.

    Ok, what, who's this again?

  4. I’m in favor of Medicare-for-all because Obamacare sucks, and not having anything sucks, but “decriminalizing” crossing the border, how is that different then open borders?

I asked that question on a liberal forum, and got two responses:

    1) That’s just silly.
    2) Decriminalizing illegal immigration doesn’t mean illegal immigrants won’t be deported, it just means that we won’t waste time and resources detaining them before deporting them.

    • I think this is largely true. Just because they’re here doesn’t mean they’ll get all the medicare / social safety net services that citizens get. We already have fairly robust systems in place that largely prevent that. Will there be some waste/fraud/etc…? Sure. There always is. But the cost of prevent %100 of that is far higher than just not worrying about the small (2-6%) that actually occurs. I’ve been a part of managing a huge indigent healthcare system in Texas and seen this issues first hand. Now, over time, will there be a push to provide them with all services as well? Maybe, but I don’t honestly see that as a particularly valid argument (slippery slope and what-not).

      • ObamaCare as it exists right now provides healthcare without reference to any citizenship. So, yes, Democrats fully intend to have all illegals on universal healthcare.

  6. I listened on the radio, while working, and can’t imagine how the pundits can say Warren won (if that’s what they are saying). Her plans were insane, and I don’t see the average American buying them at all. This “debate” was so far left that it qualified as communism (with open borders, no less!). It also showed that the Democrats have abandoned the white working class guy entirely. Because some of them have excellent union health insurance that they don’t want to give up. That’s one of the reasons why Obamacare had to have so many compromises.

The audience cheered the most left-wing statements. This shows that the heart of the Democratic party is now woke socialists. I suspect mostly young white people, but I couldn’t see them, I was listening on the radio.

Trump is very very lucky. The Democratic choice is either a semi-senile old man, or a Communist or a militant black woman. Nobody else is above 1% from what I hear.

  9. It’s amazing that literally every Dem candidate running has essentially said they will provide free healthcare to illegals. I mean, illegals more or less already get it anyway, but they want to formalize it, which will allow them to get even more services. And there will be even more Chinese grannies from prosperous families scamming wheelchairs from Medicare. Who knows what else. It’s rampant insanity. America is doomed.

  10. You can have socialized healthcare (which can work, no matter what the trucons say), feminism,, environmentalism, public transport, UBI etc, or you can have open borders.

You can have a socon paradise, with everyone settling down and having lots of babies which they support themselves, or you can have open borders.

You can have a (ugh) libertarian paradise in one country, of everyone basically doing what they want, and not have everything *completely* fall to pieces, or you can have open borders.

Open borders is where it all falls apart, no matter where you are in the political spectrum, because it’s just a gimme to Big Business.

  11. As a second generation immigrant to Canada, I’ve never quite understood why immigrants to developed first world countries wish to flood them with more immigrants, to the point of turning them into the places they escaped from. I spend a lot of time in the US and the UK, two countries where a significant percentage of the landscape has in effect already turned into the developing world, thanks to an unchecked flow of developing world people who stubbornly refuse to develop. No part of Canada’s that bad yet, but our liberal politicians won’t be satisfied until Canada has its own Baltimore or Rotherham, the seeds of future disfunction have already been planted.

    • With the exception of British Columbia, the cold weather in Canada is off-putting to many 3rd worlders who come from the tropics or desert. Many White people from other Western Countries aren’t so thrilled about the Canadian Arctic air as well. It takes a lot to be acclimated to – Celsius temperature every 4 or 5 months of the year. Furthermore, Canada is somewhat on the cooler side during the spring and fall.

    • It seems like Non-Anglo European Immigrants in Canada have a beef with Anglophone Canada, because it’s like the United States with its crass prole culture. But they enjoy the French speaking part, which reminds them of Europe.

August 1, 2019 at EDT pm

      • Well, that’s one element of Québec that resembles Europe. Another is its welfare state. It has subsidized day care, subsidized electricity and subsidized rent. Did I also forgot to mention that the universities in Québec are dirt cheap, coming from an American, and even an Anglophone Canadian.

I don’t think Europeans can’t beat the French Canadians when it comes to this type of welfare. Europeans are probably more generous with financial assistance and unemployment benefits.

Then there’s the racy, sexually suggestive culture, which is very much like Europe. Nude magazine covers and gay couples in nudity on the cover as well. Other European elements in Québec is its refined foodie scene, and its lower drinking age at 18.

Most importantly, the tax rates in Québec are very high for someone in the middle class range, like someone making $40K CAD per year. It doesn’t give people the incentive to work hard. This is the essence of left wing policies that discourages work.

Québec is more left wing than the rest of Canada according to this map. It’s dark blue, darker than anywhere in the Anglophone world with the exception of New Orleans.

  12. the dem candidates are pandering to the media on immigration…once one of them wins the nomination, they will pivot and harden their stance on the border…but they will continue to support universal healthcare because that is what the PEOPLE want …the people want universal healthcare and they want border control…the media however is funded by the corporate advertisers who want open borders…so the candidates pander to the media so that the media will say good things and not bad things about them…

how is all this not obvious?

    • America is a sh!tty place for much of the White majority who tend to live in the sticks, because blacks by far benefit from its welfare polices than the middle income and poor Whites for one specific reason. blacks get to live in the urban and partially urban areas as easy going parasites on the dole, with their Sec 8 housing, free health care, food stamps and gov’t jobs with a hiring preference for blacks. Not even Native Americans get as much benefit from welfare than blacks, simply, because the natives are a rural people. There’s a double penalty for being poor and living in the shrubs.

Probably the best way to kill this Medicare for all fantasy is to actually let people choose Medicare. Once they actually have to pay for it, they won’t be that happy. There is a reason Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans are big business.

      • Medicare is awesome. See just about any doctor you want and pay only 20% of the Medicare rate which is always less than half of the list price they charge uninsured, sometimes even a quarter.

        I want that.

        Lion of the Blogosphere

August 3, 2019 at EDT pm

      • The proper comparison to Medicare rates isn’t to the “list price” but the rates for private insurance. Virtually no one pays the “list price.” Unlike most private insurances, there is no limit to the annual out of pocket amount you can owe with Medicare. I honestly don’t get the fetishization of Medicare. Compared to most regular insurance plans, it’s vastly inferior. That’s why Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement plans are so popular.
