Yeah, people believe the crap they say they believe

This came up once again in comments responding to my post about how the Business Roundtable no longer believes that the primary purpose of corporations is to create shareholder value.

I would say that both sides of the liberal-conservative divide don’t believe that the other side is sincere in their beliefs. Liberals think that conservatives are only full of hate, and everything they say is just bullshit to hide the fact that they are full of hate. And hardly anyone in the United States who isn’t Muslim takes seriously that the people running Iran believe in the literal truth of the Koran and that the 12th Imam is coming soon.

Remember that most corporate leaders live in liberal power centers like New York, Boston, Seattle, any city in California, and they don’t watch Fox News or read Breitbart. They believe what other people in those places believe.

I would say that 60% of corporate leadership has drunk the Kool-Aid, 30% are sociopaths who don’t believe in anything except making themselves richer and more powerful, and 10% have not drunk the Kool-Aid but they are a powerless minority.

  1. There is another angle to the way liberals don’t believe conservatives are sincere: thinking it’s all about money. I’ve encountered this view from my own father, who has become a Bernie Sanders-style leftist. They think these Republican politicians or pundits who are all rah-rah free market capitalism and laissez-faire economics are just saying that stuff because the Koch brothers are paying them to.

    • Thats because the Koch Brothers are paying them to say that nonsense.

    • The Koch’s are paying them to say that.

  2. Wrong Lion. The Left doesn’t believe the Right is sincere about their beliefs. However, the Right believes that the Left is sincere when they say that they want endless access to your money, to control everything you can say and think, and to enact their revenge fantasies against whites & men (and especially white men).

    • That’s not an apt comparison, because the left doesn’t say those things. Those things are conservative misinterpretations of what the left actually thinks based on the assumption that they’re not saying what they really think.

For example, the left says they want everyone to be treated equally and have equal opportunity. They really mean this and are sincere in this belief. However, they hold a false belief that all people have equal capabilities, so the fact that we don’t see equal outcomes is, for them, prima facie evidence that equality of opportunity does not currently exist in our society. So they want to implement a bunch of left-wing programs like affirmative action and slavery reparations, which you interpret as wanting to “enact their revenge fantasies against whites & men,” maybe because you don’t see that they really believe this false belief that all people have equal capabilities. Look at how often commenters around here say that liberals secretly believe in HBD but can’t admit it. That’s incorrect. They really do believe in blank slatism.

      August 20, 2019 at 7:06 PM

      • I think even children can intuitively grasp by their teen years major differences among the races in terms of physique, intellect, interests and personality. We are all allowed to talk about this except for intellect and personality. These 2 categories of HBD insights essentially are about character and integrity more than ‘capability’.

  3. If liberals sincerely believe what they say, then they have successfully compartmentalized their brains.

Liberals say that IQ does not exist — while obsessing about outward markers of IQ like test scores and college admissions.

Liberals say they want diversity — while living and sending their kids to school in the whitest environments they can afford.

Liberals claim to love the environment — while taking overseas vacations and travelling a lot for work.

Liberals claim to dislike capitalism — while relentlessly seeking higher salaries and crowing about the increased value of their homes and portfolios.

Liberals claim to be open-minded — while ostracizing people with different opinions.

Everyone has blind spots. But the typical middle-aged liberal lives a life that almost completely contradicts his or her rhetoric.

In their hearts, most must know they are hypocrites.

  4. I’ll admit this girl’s winter cap makes it difficult to gauge her degree of hottness. But one thing I can say for sure is that she has no trouble at all handling a rifle chambered in 300WSM (Winchester Short Magnum), a beast of a cartridge that would overwhelm the vast majority of women and more than a few men too. And thanks to her efforts she’s now got some highly tasty mooseburgers.
Moral of the story: Alaskan chix are a very tough breed.

    August 20, 2019 at 7:12 PM

      • The difference between shooting the very mild 7mm-08, a round that children can handle, and shooting the brutal, experts-only 300 WSM is like the difference between a very slow jog around the block and competing in the Ironman Triathlon.

        August 21, 2019 at 8:14 AM

      • “The difference between shooting the very mild 7mm-08, a round that children can handle”

That’s a good thing. Why would anyone subject themselves to unnecessary recoil?

Stealth is right. The 300WSM 180gr she used only has about 4 ft-lbs more recoil than a 30-06 180 gr.

        August 21, 2019 at 12:45 PM

    • It’s not a beast. It’s more powerful than a .308, but not one of those cartridges that hurts to shoot.

      August 21, 2019 at 8:21 AM

      • “The 300WSM 180gr she used has only about 4 ft-lbs more recoil than a 30-06 180 gr”

Those four foot pounds can make a big difference, and in any event a 30-06 is over the line for many women. Not tough as nails Alaskan chix, of course, or for other women with lots of shooting experience. But for the typical urban hipster woman with little or no shooting experience and who’s never lifted anything heavier than a venti decafe skinny soy latte, a 30-06 (let alone a 300 WSM) would be like a Civil War artillery cannon.

        August 21, 2019 at 5:09 PM

      • I’ve never shot a rifle cartridge larger than a 30-06. But I’ve been shooting one since I was 12. Most women and teen girls could shoot it fine if they were shown how to hold it correctly. It’s not that people can’t physically handle the recoil of the more powerful small bore cartridges but that they can’t handle it psychologically. The 30-06 is about the upper limit that most people can handle without developing a flinch. It doesn’t hurt or anything. But a flinch ruins your accuracy. Regardless, my wife and older daughters dove hunt with 12ga 2.75″ 1.25oz loads which produce about 32 ft-lbs of recoil. That’s a lot more than the 300WSM.

        August 23, 2019 at 2:55 AM

      • I don’t know what I was thinking. 1 1/4 oz was what I used to use for ducks. Their dove load is 1 1/8oz which has the same recoil as the 300wsm.

  5. I read the full Business Roundtable statement. It seems to me like just some PR mumbo-jumbo, nothing to write home about. Companies still have to perform for shareholders, as always.

They say they want to make everyone happy, news at 11.

Of course metrics by which all corporations are measured by the stock market is still profit, and the instant they fail that, their stock will crash. Nothing has really changed.

    August 20, 2019 at 7:20 PM

  6. And I think it’s fair to say that neither side expects to have to live with the consequences of their political choices. Leftists would recoil at the thought of impoverished vibrant NAMs moving into their upper middle class neighborhoods, and GOP women who are against abortion in the abstract would still want their teenage daughters to be able to get one if they got pregnant by the “wrong” sort of boy.

All that said, I worry far less about the right imposing its will than the left. Most people who identify as conservative want mostly to be left alone and are willing to reciprocate. Leftists insist on micromanaging other people’s lives while lecturing you that their beliefs, preferences, and lifestyle are nobody’s business but their own.

    • When you are speaking of NAMs, you are most probably speaking of blacks. blacks never thrived in liberal areas, but as disenfranchised pariahs living in the outlying areas where there is a White majority in the center, who live in their expensive apartments that command high rents and high prices, which are off limits to blacks. It appears to be working.

  7. Corporate social justice will lead to a revival of unionism. Good.

  8. I would make an exception that Baahston is a liberal center, let alone a power center. There is no notable branding or industry associated with Beantown. The city is mired with the cursed Kennedy spirit, and you see it with the cranky Red Sox and their drunken fans. It’s also a town noted for the drinking leprechauns – the parochial Irish (again the Kennedys) and other sorts of prolish undesirables.

Why would corporate big wigs want to be associated with loserdom or loser kingdom?

Chicago would take precedence over Baahston.

    Ok, what, who's this again?

  9. I am not Muslim but I know that Iranians believe the 12th imam is in a well (or some damned thing).
I remember when Ahmadinejad addressed the UN and claimed a mysterious light surrounded him as he made his speech and all world leaders stated at him without blinking. . And he told all his cabinet ministers to sign loyalty to the 12th imam and throw the documents down a well where the 12th imam lives, (or something). That was awhile ago but Iran is still being run by the same crazy imams.

In Saudi Arabia they are beheading people for witchcraft.

I am is one f*cked up religion. Churchill was right about it.

    August 20, 2019 at 9:51 PM

    • You’re speaking of the Twelvers, a Shiite branch of Islam. Iran is a Shiite Muslim majority. Saudia Arabia is of Sunni Islam, whose adherents are the majority and they don’t believe in this sort of stuff.

      Ok, what, who's this again?

      August 21, 2019 at 9:15 AM

      • The Sunni have the Salafists/Wahhabists. They are ISIS; Al Qaeda; BIG in suicide bombing and such

Churchill was speaking of the Salafists.

        August 21, 2019 at 3:24 PM

      • The Sunnis believe in witchcraft and jinn and drinking camel urine.

  10. The Business Roundtable has no problem gambling away the wealth of the companies they don’t own to score social justice points.

A CEO with $100 million in cash and another $100 million in stock protected by put options will walk away from his failed efforts with enormous money and accolades.

    Why wouldn’t they believe it?

    August 20, 2019 at 9:53 PM

  11. Freedom of speech was a left, and even revolutionary, thing. It was invented to subvert the society. In the USA, it took a caricatural form, thanks to the jurisprudence, to allow newcomers – among them lots of Jews – to break the old wasp cast (white shoe) dominance.

Now that the new ones are in power, they are no longer interested in free speech. Only the alt-right, and some libertarian, are still big on unlimited free speech.

Once the big social platform have switched to the idea that unlimited free speech is a bad thing when it gives a platform to hainous racist whites, they will shut it down. I don’t reallt see a way out of this ….

USA, only since the 50ies, is a exception. There has never been a society granted unlimited free speech. Because it s an open wound to subversion. So it was just probably a moment.

    August 20, 2019 at 9:59 PM

    • Sadly, I agree that free speech is in it’s twilight.

    • “So it was just probably a moment.”

The elites have likely been wanting to move to the Left since FDR but knew to take their time. In retrospect, Eisenhower may be viewed as nothing more than a breather. Nixon, McCarthy and Roy Cohn they may have truly hated. Hard to say about Cohn. Opening up speech was necessary to weaken the collective social proof power of the general population and their non-cosmopolitan social institutions so the elite’s minions could maximize elite preference through the media. Once society had been sufficiently atomized to render media independent cultural social proof powerless, the need for ‘free speech’ disappeared.

In retrospect, the rise of media power and concentration in cosmopolitan centers combined with the high-jacking of religion likely put the nail in the coffin of conservatism and conservative speech.

The one, oddly, hopeful tool I see remaining in the conservative tool box is one formerly hostile to conservatives; labor unions.

There’s nothing stopping whites from joining and organizing bargaining units. These institutions can start operating as push back machines on immigration and institutional indoctrination like they once did.

  12. Isn’t one of the key themes of this blog that behavior and beliefs diverge? The most common example is that liberals claim to want diversity, but engage in SWPL hobbies and retire to their vertically gated communities. The vast majority of people claim that the race of their partner/sig. other is unimportant, but economists who study dating websites say the reality is quite different. Revealed preferences always trump stated preferences.

    August 20, 2019 at 10:32 PM

  13. Iranians believe in the 12th Imam to a far lesser degree than Israelis believe in Greater Israel.

    August 21, 2019 at 1:32 AM

  14. I’m usually cynical, but the corporate leaders they’ve specifically mentioned so far do strike me as do-good types. But 100% you are correct about the 30% or more who are psychopaths just saying anything for good PR.

    The Philosopher

    August 21, 2019 at 7:19 AM

    • Yes on 30 percent being sociopaths who don’t believe in anything but themselves, but easily half of the remaining seventy percent are sociopaths who ALSO believe this diversity/inclusion/global responsibility crap. Only a sociopath would terminate your employment if you openly expressed dissent from the prevailing orthodoxies. Most all these a**holes would put you on the street and not loose a minute of sleep over it.

  15. “Yeah, people believe the crap they say they believe.”

I agree, and it doesn’t matter even if they don’t – the PTB still is powerful.

That said… at some point you always run out of other people’s money to waste. The rubber hits the road, at the end of the day, push comes to shove, all that shit.

There’s a lot of ruin in a nation – we are determined to find out just how much!

    August 21, 2019 at 9:14 AM

  16. Either way, it’s a good policy. The current system encourages a level of short term thinking that is frankly terrifying. If a bunch of establishment types are finally objecting, great!

Not everything the left says is wrong. Business as it is currently practised is an abomination and, secondarily, destroys everything conservatives claim to want to conserve.
