iPhone 11 review

This thing is yuuuge.

The screen has that wonderful new-iPhone feel, before the nice coating wears off after just a few months.

I miss the home button. Swiping up is a pain in the ass and sometimes it doesn’t work. What was Apple thinking? (OK, they were thinking more screen and less wasted non-screen space.)

Apps that were slow as molasses on the iPhone 6, like the NY Times app and my employer’s crappy app, are way faster on the iPhone 11.

Transferring settings from the old iPhone to the new iPhone happened automatically by just leaving the two device next to each other. Easiest setup ever for a new device.

There’s a very useful feature that let’s you silence any phone calls that aren’t on your contacts list. Bye-bye robocallers! This is really a feature of iOS 13 rather than the iPhone 11. There was a workaround on previous iOS versions, but with the new feature you can still get alerts for other notifications like text messages and emails.

That’s it.

    • Somehow my wife got AT&T to sell us two 128gb iPhone 11s for $299ea. They’re being delivered today and I expect them to be very much like our 8s, but with a slightly larger screen and like Lion, I expect to be annoyed that the home button is gone.

      • Yeah, it’s pretty much what I expected, although the phone doesn’t seem too large.

The $299 phones were the result of AT&T’s almost unbelievably poor customer service. She tried to order phones last Thursday and had to call because their website wouldn’t allow her to purchase two phones. Things got worse and worse from there. She was on the phone with them several times and in total, she spent over 6 hours on hold or talking to someone. Apparently this is similar to some scam that they offer where they give you the phones at a discount and then build the missing cost into your cell phone plan, but she was able to get them without the additional cost.

What color phone did you get, Lion? I went with white. She got red and it’s not as ugly as I thought it would be.

  2. I’ve been thinking of getting some kind of iPhone, but are the screens bad? I’ve got a Moto G that’s 5 years old and the screen is still smooth as silk. It has no case and I’ve dropped it a lot.

I heard iPhone screens crack easily.

    • I have never had a non-Apple touchscreen device. The smooth anti-fingerprint coating on all of the Apple products wear off after a few months, that has been my experience. Maybe, in 2019, they’ve finally figured out how to concoct a more permanent coating, I have my fingers crossed.

      • I’ve used iPads heavily for several years. I use a pressure-sensitive stylus. They’re great. I’ve never noticed the screens degrade in anyway. I also have an iPhone but it gets way less usage, of course.

I’m typing this on my iPad using a stylus.

I’ve dropped them but on a carpeted floor. Neither iPhone nor iPad broke.

My granddaughter dropped an old one I gave her and it broke. Likely didn’t drop it on a carpet. Plus she’s got an energetic young sister.

I bought her a new one, and paid for “Applecare” (about $80 CDN). This gives better access to help plus insures against two episodes of breaking the screen.

    • Dropping an Iphone “a lot” without a case would almost certainly get you in to trouble, but the same is true for almost all modern phones which are much more fragile than the older generation G-Series phones. I use an Otterbox Strada Series leather case which allows me to toss my Samsung S10+ around the room if I so desire. If you are a person who routinely treats your phone roughly, some kind of case is pretty much a necessity. I dropped my phone the other day on a big rock while hiking a Waterfall. There is no way it would have survived without a case. Even a normal drop to the sidewalk is liable to crack a modern phone without a case.

  3. The 11 pro max has the same screen as the Xs max. I had both and I can’t tell the difference. The camera is better, and you can take wider shots, and wider portraits, for food for example. Also, better at low light, with much more AI and HDR stuff. Basically way better at photos, but Xs max was already pretty good. I find the speakers way better, but I don’t usually use them, so not much benefit at the end of the day. Battery life is better, but Xs max was already more than enough for me. I also liked the Xs max glass finish a lot more than the matte finish of the 11. The 11 is definitely heavier, when side by side, you can’t tell otherwise. The 11 is actually easier to hold. I’ve always felt that the Xs max is slippery. I don’t like covers, since it makes the phone fugly. What else? The 11 is considerably faster. I really like that.

The really annoying part so far is that iOS 13 has been buggy. Dropped SMS-es and was giving an error when trying to upgrade and no bluetooth. Also a few crashes. Even the email app crashes. I just upgraded to 13.1. Fixed all the problems so far. Still very annoying knowing that I’ve potentially lost a few days of SMS-es. Really unacceptable from Apple.

I also like the fact that I was able to backup and restore from my Hackintosh with the latest iTunes 🙂 Originally I had problems with iTunes on High Sierra Hackintosh, but no more 🙂

    • iOS doesn’t work with Bluetooth? That’s a really major bug. The worst problem with the old iOS 12 for me is that the autocorrect has major problems. It still works provided you don’t type in a long word too many times. Then it starts offering crap: the word with missing letters or with numbers appended.

You can’t tell at first. You have to type the word hundreds of times before it fails. Once failed there is no way to correct it. It must be an obscure bug, because it only happens after hundreds of times.

I think it only happens with learned words that aren’t part of the English language. In my case it fails on the word “Instagram.”

      Frau Katze

      September 28, 2019 at 11:22 AM

      • “iOS doesn’t work with Bluetooth?”

It wasn’t. I looked it up and it has to do with transferring the old config to the new phone. No reset worked. I assume that if you set it up as a new phone, it’d work, but then it’d be a pain to transfer from the old phone. I didn’t want to do that.

13.1 fixed this issue tho. Now, the only bug that I see is on yelp bookmarks, on the map, when I click on the restaurant markets, I don’t get the pop-up, which makes yelp useless. This only happens in the bookmark collection, and no on the other collections. Weird.

I do expect that pretty much all bugs will be fixed soon. 13.1.1 just launched and I’ll install it soon. 13.2 is around the corner.

This always happens with Apple, but they do fix their bugs very quickly.

        Zack

        September 28, 2019 at 2:40 PM

      • Thanks for the tip that 13.1.1 is out, installing it right now!

The new phone DID drop a bluetooth connection to a wireless speaker for no reason, but that was before I upgraded it from 13.0, so probably that bug has been fixed.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/democrats-set-a-bear-trap-11569539234

I usually hate Noonan, but she’s a wise old hack, knows Washington like I know Amsterdam Avenue, and she speaks truth here. I also think the way she characterizes a potential Warren/Trump debate is accurate.

Warren is dangerous for Trump in a way that Hilary never was.

    • The more I think of this impeachment stuff the more I think it was a brilliant move by Pelosi.

She gets to knock off Biden, and wound Trump.

She may not destroy Trump, but no one in her party will blame her for that.

There’s no risk, not even if Trump wins 2020. The Dems will retain control of Everything Else.

There will be impeachment. Get ready.

      gothamette

      September 27, 2019 at 1:07 PM

    • I’m sorry.

      Peggy Noonan is an idiot.

      She writes:

“She’ll say, “Mr. President, I know everyone’s supposed to be afraid of you and your rough ways, but I don’t find you so tough. And I’m not afraid of you.” (Transcript: “Applause, cheers.”) Then she’ll call him soft, corrupt, incompetent—a phony martyr who doesn’t respect his own supporters enough to fake respectability.”

This is nonsense. This is a projection of how Noonan feels about Donald Trump, not something Elizabeth Warren would ever say about him, let alone even bring up in debate. Maybe this is how Peggy Noonan would debate Donald Trump. It certainly is not what Warren would do.

What is Warren going to argue in front of Trump? That he refused to provide free healthcare to illegal aliens?

      She writes:

“The charge is that the American president went to the leader of Ukraine and invited him to take part in the 2020 presidential election by investigating one of the president’s likely competitors. Mr. Trump might have added pressure by delaying U.S. aid.”

Of course, the transcript is public record and completely contradicts this narrative. What it, in fact, shows is a discussion about the irregularities in the 2016 election. Clearly, Peggy Noonan has not read the transcript.

Noonan, of course, praises this as a “cunning plan” by the Democrats, when, in reality, it is the height of their playbook to use impeachment to cover for their corruption:

      1) Biden’s kid earning mucho bucks for influence peddling.
      2) CrowdStrike.
      3) A corrupt ambassador.

Trump’s play here is easy. If Pelosi is using this to get Biden and Trump then, as Biden falls and Warren rises, Trump can simply have Barr open a prosecution of Biden. After all, if Biden is no longer the front-runner, then prosecuting him will not be seen as political. Biden could, however, provide a lot of dirt on the Democrats, since Biden is too arrogant and narcissistic to go to jail for the Dems, especially since Pelosi just stabbed him in the back.

Let’s see how desperate they are to keep Biden quiet.

      • Guys:

I don’t like Noonan – she’s a swamp crittur, but I thought the article was interesting because she admits that Biden is at least part of the target here.

She was paraphrasing how Warren would take on Trump in the debates. I think she’s pretty accurate here. Warren will do far better than the loathsome Shrillary.

Get real, guys. I don’t think impeachment will work, but it will cause a ruckus.

      • I believe that Jewish American patriotism has been rising over the past several decades because America has increasingly come to resemble a nation that Jews feel comfortable in, and because Jews have come to command significant influence in this country. If Jews had not felt so comfortable they would be less patriotic. This trend may continue for another 2 decades, MAX. America, 2 decades out and beyond, will come to resemble a nation that Jews won’t necessarily feel comfortable in. Of course, America will become a nation that will piss off almost all whites.

The reasons for the ill ease will be different than those of say the 1920s-1960s but it will be felt. Who knows what can happen. Is it possible that the majority of American Jews will abandon American left liberalism? Jews have abandoned the like in Israel. Anything is possible.

In general, American whites are less patriotic than they were 5 decades ago, even two decades ago. Personally, I don’t give a s*it about 9/11 remembrances anymore. It’s only two decades in the rear view mirror but even so, it was another country, another time.

Going forward, white Americans won’t be as instinctively patriotic as their forebears, and this will have a HUGE impact on American society and politics, and the world at large. It will bring about a social revolution that will change the country as much as mass immigration has. It will make America, not America.

The drift from patriotism may be only slight at first, and it may initially involve a small – but still significant – percentage of the white population, but the impact cannot be overstated. The drift away will change everything about this country. When white Americans don’t give a damn about war memorials anymore, when they couldn’t give a s*it that some ‘tard burns or tramples on the flag, when they don’t care anymore that the pledge of allegiance is no longer sung in public, when they don’t care anymore that statues of great statesmen and citizens are removed, when they see the military simply as civil servants receiving a paycheck, when they don’t care about disabled veterans, when they see them as just a nuisance, when they don’t give a s*it that a cop is gunned down by a NAM psycho, when they openly disdain the entire idea, the futility of assimilation, when they understand that powers greater than themselves really do want to make this landmass a non-white majority polity, when they don’t care about religion, when they don’t go to church, when they couldn’t give a damn about trannies and homos and rampant media crudity anymore, when it sinks into their head that the Constitution itself is just a blunt weapon in the hands of those who can command its interpretation and dictates, when the proles become cynical, when whites don’t feel guilt anymore. When all this comes to pass and more.

White people need religion – specifically the Christian religion – and patriotism in order to maintain a coherent society. Whites have for quite a while now been abandoning both. It started with the elites and now the proles are in on the act. Things really are changing. Fast. Right on the ground. It will be interesting to see how both Cucks and Liberals will try and command the masses when appeals to both religion and patriotism no longer work. The Cucks got a taste of the future with the utter repudiation of Jeb (they never saw that coming) and the acclaim of Trump, a man at least a little contemptuous of religion, patriotism and conventional sexual mores. Things will be interesting.

        September 27, 2019 at 4:07 PM

      • @Daniel H:

“In general, American whites are less patriotic than they were 5 decades ago, even two decades ago.”

When I reflect on it, I find the erosion of my personal patriotism to be truly remarkable. I don’t know how much is the influence of various obscure Internet ideas, how much is the culture around me. But I can’t summon an ounce of patriotism anymore, after it once burned in me. I do still have some Southern patriotism though.

I do observe that my boomer father’s patriotism waned during the Clinton years, which included Ruby Ridge, Waco, and early right-wing talk of NWO (which now I suppose would be globohomo, or ZOG in dumber circles). But his patriotism picked right back up after 9/11 and never seemed to waver. I don’t see this happening to me.

I feel I can’t engage with America — I can’t make it better, I can’t fight the decline — but I can engage with my church. Church is the last form of community still operating in America, and the only real alternative to America’s toxic mainstream values.

I have to hope, for my future children’s sake, that as the secular world grows ever more degenerate and despairing, church community will start to look better and the secular world more gross and alien to those raised in church. This seems to be partly what holds the Amish together — living “English” sure looked better in the 1950s than today, so fewer Amish defect now.

        Wency

        September 27, 2019 at 4:58 PM

      • If patriotism is declining in America, then it is because these “patriots” allowed the decline to take root and infest this country…instead of the decline being rooted out.

What have these “conservatives” conserved? They’ve conserved nothing. They could not conserve a woman’s bathroom. Now we have to back in time and celebrate or memorialize each of their monuments to failure, whether it was 9/11 or WWII?

        Please.

Look at what John Major himself wrote:

“Most Conservatives are not a Brexit Party tribute band, nor have we abandoned our core values to find compromise, seek allies, and strive for unity, rather than division and disarray. We abhor the language of division and hate – and words such as ‘saboteur’, ‘traitor’, ‘enemy’, ‘surrender’, ‘betrayal’ have no place in our party, our politics, nor in our society.”

You see that? Patriotism is dying because these “patriots'” highest act is the act of seeking compromise. The art of the conservative patriot is practicing politics as conversation rather than as a form of war.

Who the hell wants to be a patriot with people like this?

  11. American patriotism is a study in human selfishness. The proposition nation is a fallacy. We are not like Russians, Koreans, French or a host of many other countries. We are not tied by blood, religion and soil. The more an American believes that he can get something out of America the more patriotic, or “patriotic” he is. I’m surprised that African Americans or Native Americans evince any patriotism at all, since they have been treated awfully and always seem to get the short end.

I’ve noted that Hindu American cans be quite patriotic, but I don’t see them signing up too much for military service. Hindus are patriotic because they understand full well that compared to India, they have a really good thing going in this country. Their patriotism, like that of many other Americans, is shallow though. It will endure as long as the good times roll and as long as they can work the system to their benefit.

Cucks over at the National Review (Kevin Williamson and David French are the representative examples) can’t wait to jettison the proles and sign up Hindus, Chinese, Latins, whatnot to their Cucktard project. Won’t come to any good though. Treacherous “patriots” aren’t worth having around. They will find a way to betray the Cucks. At least white proles, with their sentimentality, thought that they believed in something.

White identity will replace patriotism. It is a powerful force that is only going to grow going forward. No ideology, no creed, no dogma. It just demands that one recognize that one is part of a beleaguered tribe and that one is under attack and for one’s sake it is necessary to stick together, be forceful, be on the attack, and exercise power together. That’s it. The libtards, cucktards, churchtards hate it, but there is nothing they can do to stop it.

White identity is the natural path.

But the cucks will say: “Well, what is white identity? There is German, Irish, Polish, Italian…” and blah blah blah. Yet, the government makes no such distinction. They just identify “white” and target “white” legislatively.

So white identity is that which the US government targets directly.
