The popular vote

1968
1972
1976
1980
1984
1988

The Republican candidate for President won the popular vote in 5 out of 6 of these election years, sometimes by huge margins. In 1984, Reagan won the popular vote by 18 points over Mondale!

1992
1996
2000
2004
2008
2012
2016
2020

The Democratic candidate for President won the popular vote in 7 out of 8 of these election years. OK, 2020 didn’t happen yet, but anyone who thinks that Trump is going to win the popular vote in 2020 is smoking something. Trump’s most unreasonably optimistic supporters are only hoping for Trump to squeak by in the electoral college while losing the popular vote a second time.

  1. Demographics in acton.

LBJ Immigration Act and Reagan Amnesty in action.

I knew it was over in 2000 when all I heard about was the “genius” Rove sweating his strategy to get 35% of the hispanic vote.

  2. I took a holy pilgrimage to The Lion’s high school. These are photos of the graduating class of 1950:

At first I thought they were all photos of the same guy, because they all look so much alike.

    • Yeah, back in the 50s there was only one haircut anyone was allowed to have.

      • Apparently. At my college, a history major friend of mine went through the attic of an off-campus house, and found some old school newspapers. The big story was about how students would be allowed to make speeches about why they thought they should be allowed to keep their beards, and then right after the speeches, they would have to shave off the beards.

      • Seeing these things really helps you to understand history.

When I was a child, there were stock villains and stock heroes. If an actor came on screen wearing a snazzy SS uniform, he didn’t need any character development to show that he was the bad guy. No one could figure out why the Germans followed Hitler, since obviously they must have known that doing so made them the bad guys. If any Germans in a movie were half decent human beings, they were sure to betray all the other Germans just to help the Americans.

North Korean school children think Americans are the villains of the Korean war (somewhat justified considering how many civilians were maimed and killed by our bombing). We think North Korean propaganda about Americans soldiers is laughable. If the Allies had lost WW2, surely all of humanity would be shocked at the war crimes the allies had committed, but since we won, it’s no big deal.

When you were a child, homosexuals were perverts who did filthy things in public parks at night, and spread sickening diseases. Now their status as perverts automatically grants them status as the moral superiors of “close minded” people who aren’t perverts.

There was always propaganda, you just didn’t recognize it as propaganda if you grew up with it.

If the Germans had won WW2, the heroes of all the war movies would have ss runes on their uniforms. The Germans lost, and Hollywood was in the U.S., so the heroes of the movies (and TV miniseries) have screaming eagles on their uniforms instead.

You live in a reality where big bugger won the culture war. Enjoy your dystopia.

    • Very nice how there’s a camera right about the LGBTQ propaganda sheet. If you roll your eyes, we’ll know!

I bet 80% of the Asians in the school don’t give two figs about that stuff. The other 20% become fanatical SJWs and go right to a summer internship at the NY Times.

Apparently youtube is working on new AI to facilitate demonetizing videos based on the speaker’s facial expressions. Their current AI can only generate a transcript of the video and demonetize it based on the speaker using bad or controversial words. It’s amazing to me that independent news commentators can’t read mainstream stories with curse words in them without losing ad revenue, yet one of the ads youtube shows me prominently features a curse word.

  8. Obama was the only Dem in those years to really win the popular vote. The others all got less than 50% of the votes. Winning usually means a majority, not just a plurality.

  9. Trump has a good chance of winning the popular vote. The democrat candidates are extremely weak.

Biden is literally decomposing in front of us (eye falling out, teeth falling out, can’t remember words).

Bernie has gone as far as he can go, just had a heart attack and is falling fast. His support seems to be locked and never goes higher no matter what happens. He is too extreme and too old.

Warren boxed herself in with terrible economic policies that don’t work mathematically (like Bernie). When people have jobs (i.e. very low unemployment) they don’t bet on the candidate that wants to trash the entire system. Also, Warren seems too much like the professor everyone hated in college. Who wants their obnoxious professor running the country? Blacks don’t like Warren because she’s a phony. Pretending to be a minority really rubs them wrong.

Kamala Harris looks good on paper (she checks all the democrat boxes) but is the absolute worst campaigner I’ve ever seen. It’s nearly impossible for her to say anything interesting. Her body language makes her appear weak and insecure. She doesn’t know how to appear presidential.

I could keep going down the list….

The point is that Trump has a very good chance of winning because of the terrible opposition, despite what you’d think from the media and polls.

People are afraid to admit they like Trump (hurts him in polls) but his alpha call-it-like-it-is personality appeals to men and a surprising number of women, especially blue collar folk. In the voting booth nobody can tell you what to do and nobody will know what you’ve done.

Scott Adams makes a strong case for Trump winning and has a good track record of calling elections (he called the last four).

    • With all due respect @Tbone, your commentary sounds as if it was a Karl Rove interview on Fox, around 2012. We are at a point where pointing out flaws in Democrats is irrelevant to their electoral chances. It doesn’t matter if Biden is just a floating head in a jar, if he’s the nominee, Democrats are going to vote for him, and it’s the same for all the other Democratic candidates.

The voters who might be moved into switching votes to the other party is probably at a low point.

  10. Why does it matter if Trump wins the popular vote? Only the EC matters. In fact, it would be better if Trump lost the popular vote and won the EC, because liberals would have a meltdown.

    SC

    October 26, 2019 at 8:23 AM

    • I think the meltdown would be about the same, just the excuse would be different. Either the election was stolen AGAIN, or this country is full of racist inbred hillbillies.

Either way, they are going to do the sackcloth and ashes bit.

      Mike Street Station

      October 27, 2019 at 12:53 PM

      • I think you may have a slight misunderstanding of how liberals think.

If Trump wins in a way where even liberals understand was fair and square, they won’t meltdown and go ballistically angry. There’s a difference between anger and sadness. If Trump wins the popular vote, liberals get depressed and sad. If Trump loses the popular vote but wins the electoral college, liberals boil over with rage. They won’t just get mad at Trump and his supporters. They will seethe with rage at America and the entirety of its institutions.

Contrary to popular alt-right belief, liberals don’t hate America. In fact, most of them love America. It’s just that they have a different vision of what is good for America than you. They truly believe that overeducating everyone in liberal arts, and letting in millions of illegal immigrants will make America better. I want them to stop loving America. I want them to feel red hot hatred, not just for Trump, not just for his supporters, but for the very institutions that make America America. I want them to feel the desire to cut up America with scissors.

        SC

        October 27, 2019 at 5:18 PM

      • Eh, I think I have a pretty good idea of how they think. And I don’t think that if Trump had won the popular vote in 2016, Liberals would have sulked for a few weeks and then worked with the new administration to build a better America. They would have done…exactly what they did do.
