U.S. media blackout of coronavirus

Major things happening with the coronavirus pandemic today (yes, today it’s time to call it a pandemic). South Korea, Italy, Iran. But near-total yawn from America fakestream media. At CNN.com, the only front-page article I see about the virus says “What’s spreading faster than coronavirus in the US? Racist attacks against Asians.” At this point, I can almost guarantee that if people in the U.S. were actually being tested, we’d find out that the virus is spreading faster than racism. And no, it’s not racist to avoid Chinese restaurants. Who’s more likely to have come back from China with the virus? The Chinese guy preparing the food at a Chinese restaurant? Or the Mexican guy preparing the food at the Olive Garden?

Major internet companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter are censoring talk about the virus. They appear to be shadowbanning any posts about the virus, meaning you won’t find them unless you actively seek them out.

UPDATE: According to commenter GrassMudHorse, at 4:01 PM, exactly a minute after the U.S. stock market trading closed for the weekend, the New York Times suddenly put up a lead article on the home page “Coronavirus Cases in U.S., Iran and South Korea Raise Fear of Global Spread.” Did they time that to prevent a stock market crash? To give people in the know time to get out? Well you, my readers, have been in the know for two weeks but you’ve mocked me for it. On February 6th, I first warned you about the virus and advised you to sell your stocks.

And because you read my blog, you’ve known about Iran and South Korea for nearly TWO DAYS before the New York Times thought it was important enough to mention. You also know about the sudden cluster of cases in Italy making news today. Furthermore, the NY Times article is missing key information. (1) It’s likely that Iran has vastly understated the true scope of the outbreak. (2) South Korea is testing hundreds more people from the church cult who have symptoms, and likely the number of cases will increase substantially after more testing is completed.

  1. Or then coronavirus is really a non-issue.
Although I’m little bit worried why gold is going up. Maybe smart money knows something that is not yet seen in stock markets?

    • The really smart money get their gold in ways that don’t move the price. So gold going up, which is really the price of paper gold not bullion, tells us nothing about what the smart money is doing.

  2. I’m actually kind of surprised how nonchalant most of your readers are. Dying from the flu isn’t that uncommon, and even if this new virus is only equivalent to the death rate of the flu that’s like doubling your chances at minimum because it’s a new risk. So many people are in denial and making up reasons why they aren’t at risk: non-smoker, young, not-asian, etc, etc.

February 21, 2020 at EST pm

    • Denial is psychological coping mechanism for bad outcomes that are perceived as inevitable and too powerful to stop.

February 21, 2020 at EST pm

    • Unfortunately the death rate does appear higher than flu at this point. The problem is figuring the total number of people contracting the virus. Some may have only mild symptoms and not seek medical help.

Without knowing the number of such cases it’s easy overestimate the death rate (~1-2% estimate using the Chinese data).

Flu is around .05%. That’s a pretty big difference. Even allowing for some mild cases, it is pretty high.

That Chinese doctor who died was only in his 30’s.

    • And you can get vaccines for the flu. I’ve noticed on reddit that many people think it won’t hurt them for the reasons you mention.

    • “So many people are in denial and making up reasons why they aren’t at risk: non-smoker, young, not-asian, etc, etc.”

That’s because we’re not at risk. The people at risk are older with preexisting health conditions. Young, non-smokers in good health have little to worry about.

  3. I’m sorry Lion, but I can’t be in alignment with you here.

While I do agree with you about the sentiment about NY Times. They are citing some anecdotal stories of NYC Subway and a hotel worker. Without real numbers or at least a whole lot more examples. That’s just pushing guilt.

But for you to be in the right in the idea that the US is hiding cases by not testing, it would mean US has to be a whole bunch of more cases than the other countries. It is unlikely the US would have more cases when the next hardest hit nations are Japan, S. Korea, or Singapore are still in the dozens. The number of cases in the US are currently logical and normal. This does also mean NYTimes might be technically right on what is spreading faster, but by the fact of the current US spread of the virus – and it may not be true forever

Also in regard to hiding cases, if the US is hiding it without doing any quarantine actions, the virus is virulent enough that it would became obvious real quick. Social media and just the pure visibility of overwhelmed hospitals would mean the word would get out. Even if the media is self-organized enough to blackover coverage, they can’t blackout hospitals or the number of co-workers out sick.

As long the number of cases remains low, this also means the logic of avoiding Chinatown because there’s a higher chance some undetected traveler is higher in Chinatown is as reasonable as avoiding going outside because you can get run over by a car.

You might be right eventually, but currently we are not that state yet.

  4. Dr John Campbell, whom I discovered after he was linked here, mentioned in one of his videos that there were no adverts on his videos concering the corona virus because youtube had de-monetised them without explanation. I took this to be as a result of Chinese pressure, although it probably suits Western interests too.

    prolier than thou

February 21, 2020 at EST pm

    • No, it’s more general than that. Youtube is trying desperately to increase the viewers of corporate content (CNN, etc) and no doubt government stuff too.

Without one of those two categories you’re demonetized on anything vaguely controversial. Plus your videos don’t get recommend and don’t show in a search by topic. You could only find him by name.

    • You see exactly the same for the Youtube blancolirio channel, run by a pilot on some kind of leave called Juan Browne. He covers aviation (and the Oroville dam, since he in northern California). He had a lot of vids on the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash. He had a video interviewing a helicopter pilot, for example.

But he’s regularly demonitized and does not show in a search for “Kobe Bryant helicopter”. Only government or corporate videos are returned.

  5. Coronavirus spreads in Chinese prisons, over 500 infected

    https://www.foxnews.com/health/coronavirus-spreads-chinese-prisons-over-500-infected

It looks like there’s no way now that this does not become a pandemic. Maybe it was never possible, given that asymptomatic carriers can spread it.

Still speculation (yesterday) at VDARE that maybe it won’t hit Euros as hard as it hits East Asians.

    • The gender differences are believed to be due to cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking makes you more susceptible to pneumonia and to this virus. Men smoke like chimneys in China but not women.

February 21, 2020 at EST pm

      • There’s more to this, I learn from the Dr. John Campbell videos. Apparently women tend to fight off infections better than men. (Of course there’s a downside: women are more likely to get autoimmune diseases.)

The smoking can only be making it worse for the Chinese men.

    • My moment when I thought “pandemic” was hearing about cases in Iran. There can’t be many Iranians in China. There’d be diplomats mostly, I would have thought. It doesn’t seem like it would be a tourist hot spot for Iranians.

Evidently this disease is extremely contagious.

  6. if there is any conspiracy it is that they wanted to wait until the market was almost closed to put this up:

  8. Yep, funny timing. Btw, I do appreciate that you are positing all these updates about the virus. As an anecdotal evidence, at my doctor’s office in SoCal they told me they had a lot of flu cases but they did not think it was this new virus – presumably, the flu has different symptoms from a cold-like virus. It will be also interesting how people will behave if/when the shit hits the fan. In Ukraine yesterday the locals wanted to burn down the place where they were quarantining folks returning from China.

  9. Lion you do realize the virus basically only infects people of Asian decent? They have more of the receptors that it binds to. You’re fear mongering for nothing.

    • Totally false, there’s an virus outbreak in Iran, and it spread very easily in Italy, with many of the Italians in serious condition.

  10. Mers was more deadly by percentage, right?

    Joe

February 21, 2020 at EST pm

    • WAY more deadly. With MERS you have something like a 1 in 3 chance to die.

It’s also part of the reason why this new virus is spreading everywhere. As a virus, you can’t spread very effectively if you kill a large percentage of your hosts.

  13. Yeah, I search everyday for info. I find very little. I have to come here to get info. Globalists do not want to believe this is happening. I agree it is weird we aren’t testing more people. I do think media liberals are pretty cold hearted and thus care little about the suffering and deaths of so many. If there is a conspiracy to give minimal coverage to this pandemic, then bot the USA government and media are in on it. Trump himself can take to Twitter and blow the lid off unless he fears stock market crashes.
