Prediction: Biden will win the debate

Remember the Lloyd Bentsen-Dan Quayle debate? Notice the smile on Bentsen’s face when Quayle predictably compared himself to “Jack” Kennedy, and Bentsen knew that he would get to clobber him with the zinger his debate-prep people prepared for him and Bentsen had practiced.

This Associated Press article should worry Trump supporters. Trump is barely doing any debate prep, while Biden has probably been doing little else. Trump is very predictable in the things he brags about and the insults he hurls. I am sure the Biden has several Lloyd-Bentsen-type zingers locked and loaded. The mainstream media will then surely amplify it to deafening proportions, and for 24 hours we will hear nothing on CNN except for how Biden really crushed Trump.

But wait, isn’t Biden supposed to be “senile”? That’s what you believe if you live in a right-wing echo chamber, but there don’t seem to be any leaks from the Biden camp about Biden being too senile to debate. I predict that Biden’s “senility” will turn out just like Hillary Clinton’s supposed “illness” back in 2016. Four years later, there’s still no sign of the mysterious malady that was supposed to have her on death’s door.

  1. If Biden is so sure to “crush” Trump, why then does Pelosi keep insisting that he should not participate in the debates? Is she stating a genuinely held belief, or are these just the lines she’s been handed and told to recite?

  2. That was Lloyd Bentsen. Show me where Biden does that to someone in a debate. Or, show me where Sarah Palin does it to someone. She had more debate prep than any candidate.

Why did Palin have so much prep? Because her handlers were afraid she’d get clobbered. She didn’t get clobbered, but then again, she was going against Biden.

Trump also didn’t prepare against Hillary. Hillary was more formidable than Biden. Trump managed to land big on her. Show me a highlight of anyone landing big on Trump without him hitting back even harder.

    • Polings showed that Hillary Clinton got a bounce from all three debates versus Trump. Trump does not do well in debates because he is so stupid and so limit in his skills.

      • Polling about Hillary wasn’t all that accurate; maybe because people were more sympathetic to a woman over the phone, but not in the booth; etc. etc.

      • Hillary won the election by 3 million votes which accurately relfected the national pollings. Wisconsin and Michicgan were polled as too close to call and those polls were accurately. As Nate Silver has explained, what helped Trump was that the results in Penn, Mich, and Wisc were correlated even if too close to call. Trump won due to that correlation.

  3. It wasn’t an “illness” that was claimed. The claim was she had Parkinson’s and she was taking meds for it that had well known side effects such as those videos where she is having seizures or her reaction to flashing lights. Personally I think she has something, but it may not be as bad as parkinsons. Dementia is a much more disqualifying illness in a president.

  4. Sure, it seems likely that Biden will “win” to some degree, by being more articulate or whatever. The question is, can Trump get his points through even as he “loses”.

  5. I think Biden will disappoint most people during the debate. He will not handle President Trump very well. We will make a couple of gaffes that will repeated endlessly by Trumpist, and he will be so vague on policy and to disappoint most people.

Biden is running as if all he has to do is not lose and is running a prevent defense. This is a mistake against Trump

Here is an article that explains why Biden will end up looking bad. Biden is not ready to debate someone who does not play by any rules.

I have actually meet him one time and thought he was an idiot. Back in March, Klain was making the media round so that he could pat himself on the back about the Ebola response during the Obama Administration. I thought Klain’s number one concern with Covid-19 was that no one should be able to call him a racist. Klain did not care how many Americans were going to die from Covid-19 just as long as the Chinese and Chinese Americans got what they wanted.

  8. I predict another boring win for Trump in the presidential race. Trump supporters will be sticking with him thick and thin. The race is close anyway, but Trump will just trump Biden at the end.

    Ok, what, who's this again?

    September 27, 2020 at 3:24 PM

    • There is no polling data that shows that the race is close and currently Biden is leading Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvai by a larger margin that Hillary Clinton ever did. If President Trump win, he will still lose the popular vote by a larger margin in 2016. In addition, there is a probablity that Trump wins but the Democrats win control of the Senate. If that happens, what is the over and under of how many times Trump will be impeached.

      • Second terms are always worse than the first term. Also, if Trump is re-elected, the corruption will go up and there will be riots and protests daily across the U.S. Also, even if the Republicans manage to hold onto the Senate in 2020, if Trump is re-elected in the Democrat will definitely win control of the Senate in 2022 (look at the last two years of Reagan, and GW Bush). if Trump is re-elected against the indications of all of the polling data and political trends, the Repubican Party will be a smoking crater by 2024 due to the loss of so many white voters.

  9. The Atlantic also has an article that indicates that Biden will perform poorly in the debates because he, like Trump, does not like to prepare. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/09/trump-biden-first-debate-preview/616396/

It appears that Biden had rather sit around and tell old stories than stand behind a podium and have someone play Trump for debate prep. Biden is going to think that this debate is like past debates and that will be a fatal mistake for Biden.

The lack of debate prep and the lack of campaigning does not speak highly of the Biden brain trust. The Biden team thinks they have already won and just need to run out the clock.

    • Trump did not dominate her. Go back and review how the media covered the debates in 2016. The Clinton team thought they won all three debates handily because Hillary Clinton prepped for the debates and Trump did not.

In Tuesday debate’s aftermath, see how many times a gaffe by Biden is talked about versus President Trump’s non-answers, lies, and gaffes. The conventional wisdon is that sitting President do badly in their first debate GHW Bush, GW BUsh, and Obama because they do not prep enough.

        September 29, 2020 at 12:32 AM

      • Map,

        Based on the wikipedia page:

For the first debate in 2016,

Writing on September 28, FiveThirtyEight found that every scientific poll to that point had suggested that voters thought Hillary Clinton performed better than Donald Trump in the first debate.. A CNN/ORC poll of debate viewers found that 62% believed Clinton won, compared to 27% for Trump.

        For the second deate.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll showed that 42% of respondents considered Clinton the winner of the debate, while 28% considered Trump the winner, and a slightly higher percentage (30%) were undecided.[82] A CNN/ORC poll found that 57% of viewers believed Clinton won, compared to 34% for Trump, despite the fact that most respondents felt that the latter exceeded expectations. An NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll showed that Clinton won the debate with 44% to Trump’s 34%, while 21% said neither won.[84] A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 53% of viewers said Clinton won while 32% said Trump won.[85] According to a Gallup poll, 53% of viewers considered Clinton to be the winner while 35% considered Trump the winner.[86] A Fox News poll of debate watchers found 52% considered Clinton the winner compared to 39% for Trump, with 9% saying they tied or did not know. A Baldwin Wallace University Community Research Institute (CRI) poll of likely Ohio voters showed that 52% found that Clinton won the debate, 31% that Trump won, and 17% found that it was a tie.[88] According to a Qriously poll of likely voters in eight key battleground states, 44% gave the win to Clinton while 33% gave it to Trump. According to a Fox 2 Detroit/Mitchell Poll of likely Michigan voters, 48% gave the win to Clinton while 36% gave it to Trump.

Trump’s claim that he won the second debate with Hillary Clinton “in a landslide” in “every poll” was found to be false by Politifact, which noted that “not only did Trump not win by a landslide margin, he didn’t win any of the polls at all”

        For the third debate:

A Morning Consult/Politico poll found that 43% of respondents considered Clinton the winner of the debate, with 26% saying Trump. An NBC/SurveyMonkey poll showed that 46% of respondents considered Clinton as the winner, where as 37% considered Trump the winner. An ABC News poll found that 52% of likely voters thought that Clinton was the winner, with 29% saying that Trump won the debate.[105] A Gallup poll showed that Clinton beat Trump 60% to 31% in perceptions of who won debate. A poll by the CBS News Battleground Tracker of viewers in 13 swing states found that 49% of voters in those states thought that Clinton won the debate, while 39% thought Trump won, with 12% calling it a tie.

Donald Trump’s use of the phrases “bad hombres” and “nasty woman” spurred massive viral backlash.

An Associated Press/GfK poll, which asked respondents about the candidates’ performance in all three debates, found that 69% thought that Clinton performed better while 29% thought that Trump did.[112]

So what are we suppose to believes, dozens of polls or the memories of a partisan hack.

      • LOTB,

First, thank you for posting more on your blog rather than depending on Twitter.

Look up the work of Rachel Bitecofer of the Niskanen Center. Her voice is hard to listen to but she argues that elections are about turnout rather than persuasion. If a candidate is worrying about swing voters, they are running a persuasion campaign. If a candidate is trying to make his supporters angry, that is a turnout election and swing voters do not matter.

The real discomfort on the left is the concern that Biden is running a persuasion campaign trying to get more votes from middle class whites when the Biden campaign should be running a turnout campaign to get more blacks, Latinos, educated whites to the polls where they vote in overwhelming number for Democrats.

I suspect that if Biden loses in 2020, the entire discussion for the Democrats will be about throwing middle class whites under the bus to help get better turnout. If Biden wins with lower black and Hispanic turnout than Obama received, then the Democrats will focus more on middle class whites.

And despite this overwhelming “polling” that oversamples democrats and tells us how wonderful Hillary Clinton was, she lost…and then you had several polls coming out saying how Hillary was a “bad candidate” and that someone else should have ran.

I watched the debates…in their entirety. Hillary Clinton was alarming in the level of war-mongering she demanded.

    • What do you mean “intolerably gay”? I take it you don’t mean that literally as homosexuality is static and relatively rare. . If anything the generations you criticize were the last ones that had a taboo against it. Do you think of younger generations as straight and strong? I often hear criticism that is just the opposite.

      • Literal homosexuality is less gay than the Silents and Boomers. The entire cuck ideology of Post-War Americaniam is profoundly weak and gay, including especially worshipful fanfiction of JFK.

I can only thank God this era is coming to an end, or at least it looks like it is with Trump. The more political polarization the better, as long as it means dispensing with all the fakery that props up losers like Bush and McCain.

If all this comes to is a Who-Whom hellscape, where Woke Capitalists mouth platitudes and prop up a few black mediocrities, while simultaneously impoverishing the middle class… I will take that over the effete, toothless civic nationalism of the Silents and Boomers.

It is only good and right that present white Americans be total wage slaves living in perpetual debt to Big FA(N)G, forced to grovel and apologize for imaginary sins to earn their bread. Just look at what their recent ancestors did when given freedom and prosperity.

Getting old and losing a step isn’t an illness per se, but most of us of a certain age have had to have that conversation with a parent where you let them know that you’re taking their car keys away, and it’s for their own good. That’s the test here: if you’d be comfortable getting into a car with Biden as the driver, then go ahead and vote for him. That’s why the Democrats keep saying there shouldn’t be any debates. That and the fact that the more you see Biden the less the electorate likes him. He’s a big phony with a plastic smile. Must have gotten that from his Used Car Salesman Daddy.
After the first debate, that “lead” he has should disappear quickly. A second debate may not even happen. I predict disaster for Biden on Tuesday. If he even shows up.

Plus she is a sociopath so she’s constantly acting and insincere anyhow. When she’s trying to fake excitement her insincerity comes through so obviously.

Biden on the other hand has all the signs of dementia, which is further confirmed by the several leaks from worried campaign staffers (there were never any leaks from Hillary’s campaign). Lion presumes this is just the right-wing media lying on Biden, or manipulating video to make Biden seem stupid, but there’s too much evidence out there showing that something is seriously, seriously wrong with Biden. Trump should be hyper-prepared as a matter of principle for several scenarios from not being too tough on a pathetic sleepy ‘mumblin’ Joe’ (the dementia is real) to the usual transition to Super-Biden (it’s a trap). Unprepared conceit sank Clinton and can sink Trump.

What’s even more interesting is that Tompkins County is Whiter than some of the other counties in Upstate NY that voted for Trump. What’s even more fascinating is that Tompkins County favored Clinton more than those counties that are De-facto Democratic (such as those counties with major urban centers that have a large NAM population). A few things you can take from this: Tompkins County is one of the most educated counties in NY State with very few NAMs in its midst, and the City of Ithaca is just a small scale Portland.

  24. I think Barrett is a more interesting topic. Not sure she is really the best pick if we are looking for a solid anti-immigrant court. A devout Catholic who has adopted Haitians doesn’t seem like the most reliable vote. Trump seems to be moving away from immigration to try to win on the same old abortion/corporate regulation/law and order shtick the GOP has used for decades.

  26. Re: Hillary

My late father always had a theory that unpleasant women (“bitches”, if you will) have a tendency to live forever. I’ve certainly collected more anecdotal evidence of this in my time; my kindest aunt died at 54, my cruelest at 91. I do kind of think that if Hillary was a man, he’d be dead or dying by now — the shock of the defeat would have sent his sent his health into a downward spiral.

As for Biden, didn’t he prep for the Democratic debates and still kind of blow it? I expect some confusing and downright stupid statements from both of them, but I don’t expect Biden to get massacred. And if the debate is anything but Biden getting massacred, the media will be fairly successful (in the eyes of swing voters) at spinning it as a Trump defeat.

    Piscataway

    September 28, 2020 at 1:47 PM

    • Eh…I don’t.

NJ has been a tiny Democratic bluesy state playing 2nd fiddle over its larger and robust cousin NYS for eons. It has a few crumby NAM cities like NAMden, NAMwark, Noisey City and the SWPLike Hobo-Kin (only deemed a desirable place because of its proximity to the Staten Island Ferry), not to mention funky suburbia like Hee-Haw-Ken, Teethering-Boro, the inland river moat, Sea-Caucus, the planet Neptune and your beloved Piscataway.

This is was the 2016 presidential election results for Joisey, similar to NYS with more reddy areas, and blue overall, only because White liberals + NAMs outnumber Joisey Shore guidos and proles.

And here’s another reason why NJ plays 2nd fiddle to NYS.

NJ’s Montclair being the most SWPL oriented suburbia lacks the scenic beauty of the lower status Hipsterville of Beacon, NY.

      Montclair’s downtown area:

      Beacon, NY:

New Yorkers pay a lot of taxes like a mountain tax so they can stare up and saw “wow”.

      • Montclair is the only town in NJ where Manhattan urban strivers feel at home. This signifies the reason why Montclair is the most SWPL oriented suburb in NJ. Manhttan SWPLs known moving to NJ is a death knell to their social status. NJ doesn’t have any cities conducive to White “culture”.

  29. Trump basically lost every debate to Hillary and it didn’t matter. Hell, he embarrassed himself in some GOP debates as well (remember “Triad”?) Biden is suffering from cognitive decline but he has moments of great coherence, as in the Georgia debate. That’s what the Dems are betting on.

    Brendan

    • “Triad.”

Yeah, Marco “Foam Party” Rubio running around talking about nuclear submarines and constantly repeating how some world bogeyman “knows exactly what he is doing.”

A complete flop using military dialectic to challenge Trump’s rhetoric of getting American’s out of forever wars.

      map

      September 29, 2020 at 1:19 AM

      • “getting American’s out of forever wars.”

That has to be the most underplayed aspect of this administration. The wars along with the economy were the two biggest issues of the 2008 election.

The Dem’s blamed baby Bush for the financial crisis even though it was actually their affirmative action sub-prime mortgages that caused it. Bush just happened to be unlucky enough to be in office when the house of cards collapsed. This time around, the msm blames Trump for the virus’ economic impact even though that wasn’t his fault, either. The virus has wreaked havoc on developed economies worldwide regardless of government response or numbers infected. With all of Trump’s faults, it’s hard to believe that the issue weighing most heavily on his re-election is the one he’s actually not responsible for.

But back to the “forever wars”. Obama ran on a platform of marxist medicine and ending the forever wars. The msm spent most of Bush’s two terms yammering about the wars. Yet that stopped the instant Obama was elected. If anything he expanded the wars and made it worse. Trump tried to end the wars that pretty much everyone around the world hated and all he got was criticism for it.

Yeah, I get it. They hate Trump and aren’t going to give him credit for anything. Not an economy that raised the wages for working and middle class (especially minorities and women) more than anyone else has in decades. Nor for trying to pull us out of wars that have cost us trillions and well over a million lives. But if they don’t care about minorities, women, working / middle class or ending disastrous wars, then just what do they care about? Because they certainly don’t care about us.

That’s not a rhetorical question. I want people to think about it. If they don’t care about any of those things then what do they care about???

  30. Trump is an entertainer, and a good one. I have watched a couple of his airport MAGA rallies over the last week. He tells stories, anecdotes, makes jokes…seemingly spontaneous, until you realize they are the same at every rally. He raises and lowers his voice, pauses for effect, has dialogs with himself…he’s close to professional at it.

Anyway, a competent entertainer who also makes serious statements (he is running for the most powerful job in the world) will do just fine, and beat Biden, in my opinion. He didn’t have his act so well-honed last time around. People will enjoy him tomorrow night. And he loves doing it.

    Amused Observer

    September 28, 2020 at 2:54 PM

    • There is a conventional wisdom that Trump does best with a live audience since he gets immediate feed back. The crowds at his rallies are very friendly to his act and that makes the act easier.
A compentent debater such as Bill Clinton in his prime or Barack Obama in his price would have destroyed Trump since they would have practice enough to learn how to get under his skin and off of his routine. However, Biden is not capable of doing that. So the Democrats are back to hoping that the debates do not matter since they did not matter in 2016.

Lion talks about the Chassidim of the Hudson Valley, namely Curious George in Orange County and the rise of infections like the city, yet he forgets one place in Beltway Brooklyn that is home to a super orthodox community of Middle Eastern Jews known as Gravesend which also has seen a rise of covid cases. The name would be fitting if more and more people die from the virus in that neighborhood.

    • By the way, you shouldn’t be pissed that the Chassidim are spreading the covid virus like wildfire in places like Orange County. One group who devolves need to devolve an entire region that needs to be devolved in order to evolve. Other than the vineyards and green spaces in Orange County, the county is decrepit, rusty, crime ridden and needs to be cleaned out in order to rebuild. Newburgh is a prime example.

  34. Trump is an alpha male. As such, he does not rehearse for anything. He already has confidence that he will prevail and does not give a shit what anybody thinks. I am not sure where you are getting the idea that Democrats are not worried about Biden’s senility. There are numerous Democrat insiders such as David Axelrod who have expressed their concern. Others, like Nancy Pelosi, have been trying to get Biden out of the debates for months now. Biden’s staff have been hiding him at every opportunity. A confident campaign does not behave this way.

  35. Lion – I took a walk in Hell’s Kitchen today and it was nightmare navigating in Manhattan seeing swarms of NAMs and proles not wearing any face covering. Your neighborhood was especially severe, where every street block is all eateries making social distancing impossible when outdoor dining.

Guess who I saw today? Besides spotting Toby Milstein in the Flatiron District last year, I spotted another well known individual mentioned on your blog near the same area by Madison Square Park. Except this person isn’t much of a positive inducing character.

Hint: He has an olive complexion and he wore his trademark blue suit without a face covering which is the reason why I could recognize him. A prole of course and my nick name for this individual is the Grim Reaper and he was speaking to an Asian woman.

  40. Biden won by accomplishing his main goal of not looking senile by simply showing up, looking sharp and sounding cool and calm, and as a bonus making Trump go off-topic and stumble.

Biden handed Trump the debate with several senior-moment goofs and insults, not to mention the mannah of absolutely crazed remarks like ‘I’m the Democratic Party’ but unprepared Trump didn’t grab that and go for daylight. The moderator joined the slaughter with loaded but very predictable questions for which unprepared Trump had no ready answer and counter-punch. Biden, in contrast, had a ready attack on most of Trump’s stumbles.

I’m surprised they had no opening statements. That worked to Biden’s advantage, a golden opportunity missed for Trump to frame the riots, COVID, his peace efforts, and his future plan.

Meanwhile the ‘fair’ Debate Commission is not following its own rules and again using polls to decide on who debates that exclude the Libertarian and Green by not asking about them. It would be very interesting to see the Green undermine Biden’s Green happy-talk and the Libertarian Jo Jorgensen hammer on the deficit and left rioting and ballot access suppression.
