The sheriff is stupid

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/10/05/las-vegas-sheriff-mass-killer-likely-had-some-help-at-some-point.html

Clark County, Nev., Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Wednesday that it was only logical to “make the assumption” that Stephen Paddock had “some help at some point” in pulling off Sunday’s massacre.

As evidence, Lombardo pointed to gunman Paddock’s huge arsenal, explosive materials found in his car and his meticulous planning.

No, that’s not logical at all. You can buy guns at any gun store in Nevada. You don’t need help to rent a hotel room and then carry some guns up there. Everything points to Paddock planning this and carrying it out all by himself.

“What we know is Stephen Paddock is a man who spent decades acquiring weapons and ammo and living a secret life, much of which will never be fully understood,” the sheriff said.

There’s no evidence he was living a “secret life.” He was living a secretive life, sure. Although it wasn’t completely secret. We know that he told his girlfriend’s brother-in-law about his gun-collecting hobby.

Analyzing Paddock’s computer, cellphone and other electronic devices, Investigators have found no obvious ideological motive, no clear connection to extremists or activist groups or outward display of mental illness, The Associated Press reported.

Some nutjobs on the internet think there’s a conspiracy by authorities to hide his ideological motives. I don’t buy it. He just had no understandable motive because he had schizophrenia or some other sort of psychosis.

  1. Left criminals and terrorists kill people with guns, then left demands the innocent be disarmed.

  2. @langdaleca on twitter has made a reasonably compelling case that Paddock was trying to demonstrate to gov how poorly prepared they are wrt security. Explosives in car. Knocking out window overlooking airport. Shooting at the jet-fuel tanks. Breadcrumb trail of hotel rentals over similar event venues.

I have to agree all of it very much fits with what the twisted mind of a crazy person wanting to “send a message” would do.

  3. Yup. Unless some BIG SURPRISE drops, it’s looking more and more like you’re right. Just a nut job acting nutty. No ideological motive.

It is the sheriff’s job to investigate and make sure Paddock did not have any help. Maybe he was just not speaking carefully. It was not that he was assuming Paddock had help, he just wanted to investigate the possibility completely before saying Paddock did it by himself.

  5. I live in Vegas and one thing that struck me (refreshingly) when I came here 6 years ago was none of that hyper-security that you notice around office buildings in Manhattan or airports or other places where large numbers of people congregate. Vegas was open and free-wheeling. That was refreshing, and gave off a good vibe. That will change.

Security was more concerned with catching cheats and pickpockets than criminals and terrorists. We just can’t have good things anymore.

    • Maybe you weren’t being inconvenienced but you were being watched and observed more than you were in NYC. They also used to do stuff like this:

    • I’m trying to think of when the last time any sheriff anywhere did something to publicly distinguish themselves as smart rather than stupid.

  7. Media sources have been telling us that Poddock was scouting many different venues and a few cities, before making the final decision to massacre proles in his own backyard. I don’t think anyone with schizophrenia can travel to many different places and ponder, hmmm, should I stay or should I go, at the various hotels.

  8. Even a schizophrenic would have a motive, wouldn’t he? It may not be a logical motive but it would be a motive that made sense to a damaged mind, like Paddock thought Las Vegas was populated by aliens or demons or something.

    • Arrested drunk man claims he time traveled to warn of aliens

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Police say a central Wyoming man they arrested for public intoxication claimed he had traveled back in time to warn of an alien invasion.

Casper police say the man they encountered at 10:30 p.m. Monday claimed he was from the year 2048.

KTWO-AM in Casper reports that the man told police that he wanted to warn the people of Casper that aliens will arrive next year, and that they should leave as soon as possible. He asked to speak to the president of the town, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) northwest of Cheyenne.

The man told police he was only able to time travel because aliens filled his body with alcohol. He noted that he was supposed to be transported to the year 2018, not this year.

  9. Not really appreciating being lumped in among “some nutjobs on the internet” but hey, I do appreciate the h/t.

“Analyzing Paddock’s computer, cellphone and other electronic devices, Investigators have found no obvious ideological motive, no clear connection to extremists or activist groups or outward display of mental illness, The Associated Press reported.”

I would be interested in knowing which “investigators” we’re talking about here. The FBI investigators are in charge of this aspect. Did I miss the press conference where they released this information to the public? I certainly don’t recall the agent at the press conference last night talking about this.

So did the FBI release all this important information just to the AP? Is it conspiratorial to not consider that likely?

And of course we are talking about an FBI who have spent the last year trying to cover up their embarrassing reliance on a dodgy dossier designed to demonize the POTUS. Now there’s a conspiracy I could get my teeth into!

I certainly understand that there are (or may be) compelling reasons for NOT revealing the motive(s) at present. This is, after all, a criminal investigation and the right of the public to get information has to be subsumed as long as there may be good reason for secrecy. Trust for now, but verify.

I guess we will find out in the fullness of time.
