Bright (2017)

This was the most enjoyable action movie I’ve watched in many years. I don’t know why it only got a 28% postive rating from the critics. This is the best of its genre.

Los Angeles buddy-cop movie starring Will Smith meets orcs, elves, and magic.

The orcs are the blacks of this alternate reality. The cops are racist against the orcs, giving them extra-judicial beatings when they arrest them, etc.

The elves are the elites of this alternate reality, but we don’t learn as much about them as we do about the orcs.

Will Smith’s partner is the first orc to become a police officer.

There’s lots of hand-to-hand fighting, shootouts, car chases, plus magic.

That’s really all there is to say about it.

  1. I never watch action movies. Never have. Last I remember watching was Batman; a female friend wanted to see it. Also Terminator or Air America. Can you give me a short list of great action movies and then explain what you like about the genre?

    • I generally am not a fan at my age. Most of them are tiresome to sit through.

I watched the Terminator in the theater in the 1980s, and loved it back then.

      • Lethal Weapon was good. Having Shane Black as the writer never hurts.

    • I dislike action movies too but the bourne identity films (including the one not featuring matt damon) are pretty good.

  3. Bright was entertaining. I used a pic of Noomi Rapace as the evil elf in this article about Netflix: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4135485-netflix-case-wrong

Netflix is making a sequel. The one reviewer who liked it was Peter Debruge of Variety: http://variety.com/2017/film/reviews/bright-review-1202646941/

  5. The plot in this movie often seemed rushed. A lot of exposition is unloaded on the audience through clunky dialogue. But Will Smith mostly manages to make lemonade out of those lemons. With a budget of $100 million, Netflix should have made a series rather than a movie. That would have given the writers time to subtly build a world that the characters could inhabit.

With orcs as surrogate blacks, and humans as surrogate whites, and a black actor as the representative of humans, this story could have been a great opportunity to illustrate white frustration with black dysfunction. Instead, the writers pulled their punches.

    • If anything, I felt the movie could’ve been about 20 minutes shorter and it wouldve been better.

  6. It is claimed that the Zombies in George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” were inspired by black rioters.

    • I was told by someone who works in the comic book industry and who knew GR that night of the living dead was meant to be a commentary on rampant consumerism.

  7. Have you seen the various “Orc Lives Matter” memes that the alt right kids have been making? My favorites are: “Orcs would have created Rivendale too if it weren’t for 1,000 years of Elvish oppression”. Or another golden one: “Sire, the Orcs are at the gates”… “well don’t be racist. Let them in!”

  8. Good movie.

Notable that critics are at ~30% approval while audiences are at ~90% approval.

The critics are just tools of the Narrative; they were told that the movie mocked the modern religion of Oppressed minorities by casting Orcs in the role of Blacks; thus they dutifully went out and scribbled negative reviews.

  9. Are the elves whites? Or Jews? They seem like they like to spend money and they seem sinister.

  10. Some of the comments during the movie explicitly pointed out the physical differences of Orcs, they make great linebackers but you don’t see them in the NBA. And more to the point, the Orcs are dumb, not just ignorant, but stupid. Will Smith’s partner has to constantly have things explained to him throughout the movie by an exasperated Will Smith.

    • That’s because Will Smith’s partner was a goody two shoes who didn’t understand the real world, it wasn’t an indication of lack of IQ. The orcish parnter was presented as an orc who was exceptional for orcs, and thus hated by other orcs for trying to be human.

        This.

The other orcs in the movie were cast as mafioso.

  11. i couldn’t make it past the first act. i found the allegory/dialogue clunky. i heard the action picks up in the later acts, but i just couldn’t make it into act 2 despite will smith’s best efforts.

  12. ResetEra: Most are really worried about the Russia investigation. They feel like the Republicans are not just rallying around Trump but setting the table for the removal of Sessions which will then lead to Mueller and Rosenstein being fired.

Now a few diehards still believe that superman Mueller will save them, often citing “muh Watergate”. But they are fewer and further between.

    • Not enough has been written about #Resistance’s child-like adoration of Robert Mueller, who must be one of the whitest men in America. Put a Stetson on his head and he’d fit right in an episode of Mad Men or a Fallout loading screen. When things get tough, Obama’s children seek solace with a great white father. One day there won’t be any more of those, kids.

  13. Also, Trump’s approval is up to 38.9 in 538 and the Dem Generic Congressional ballot lead has sunk to 10.3 from 13.3. Could be a blip, but also worth keeping an eye on.

One thing that I feel cannot be denied is the Trumpification of the Republican party. The party is way more Trumpist today then it was last Jan over even just 3 months ago. You got guys like Lindsey Graham attacking the FBI and calling for the destruction of the immigrant community. McCain is dead in a few months and Corker and Flake have been exterminated. Romney is going to be a pain in the ass but at the end of the day he is just one man and will just be some irrelevant guy sitting in his ivory tower.

  14. It was pretty dumb. And they left Checkov’s tape-recorder hanging. I thought for that would be used to exonerate them from gunning down the corrupt cops.

  15. The audience score was 87%. I would not bet money on this but I think Will Smith is getting drubbed mercilessly by the critics as compensation for having been adored and built up early in his career. Neither are fair.

      • Did you watch the whole video

He starts the review with a full two minute rant about the racial aspects (3:30 – 5:30) and continues noting the racial angles for another two minutes. This is what clearly bothered him most.

The rest of the review points out narrative inconsistencies. Yes, there are all those and more, but any movie about magic and other world creatures has inconsistencies. This is not a physics class.

        A rather petty review.
