Black expectations

I found this quote from a CNN article interesting:

Reed said that while his father instructed him to go out of his way to be deferential and compliant in any encounters with police, “this generation has a different expectation.”

Deferential and compliant is how middle-class whites behave when they are stopped by the police. If blacks are behaving differently than that, then it’s no wonder that police are treating them poorly.

  1. Maybe, but kissing the boots of power-tripping cops sure gets old.

    • You can keep your dignity and even make a cop get pissed off at you without getting in trouble yourself, but it requires an IQ over 115, no outstanding warrants and a cool head. Most of Reed’s cohort are going to fail on at least one of those counts.

      • Can you elaborate on these oh-so-brainy ways of pissing off roidhead cops without escalating the situation?

      • A lot of it’s situational, but if you haven’t been pulled over for a real reason and the cop’s obviously on a fishing expedition, you can drive him up the wall by not taking any of his bait but playing around with it some. For example, one time I was stopped at a drunk checkpoint. The cop thought I had pulled in faster than I should have and was spitting mad at me from the start, but I hadn’t broken any laws and in a calm but blunt manner told him so. Well, that just made him even madder, that I was both calm and brusque after he’d just had his blood pressure rise from yelling at me. He told me to pull off into a parking lot to the right for closer examination. He really wanted to nail me on something. Asked me for my driver’s license, insurance, etc. To test if I was drunk (I’m a teetotaler), he did a quick spotcheck while I was still in my car by moving his finger around and asking me to follow it with my eyes. I lost focus for a second just to get his hopes up. Now he thought he had me. He told me to step out of the car for the real test. This time I did the walking, touch my nose with my forefinger, etc. perfectly. He had me repeat it several times out of frustration, and by the time it seemed safe to conclude he’d exhausted all his options I leaned forward and said, “You got nothin’!” It was the first and only real twist of the knife, but it fixed hard. After a little bluster I left without a ticket, but one blue-faced cop.

Another trick they’ll do is make a statement or ask a question, and then trail off without finishing. It’s pure and simple fishing. Their expectation is that you’re so flustered by being pulled over that you’ll blurt out something incriminating to fill the gap, or at least grovel so that they can get the pleasure of a power trip. When that happens, just say nothing and look at them. If they ask why you’re not saying anything, say “You started to say something but trailed off. What were you going to say?” Even pursue it if they change the subject. “No, I want to hear what you were going to say. If you started to say something then it’s something worth finishing. What were you saying?” Often they don’t even know, and you can make them feel pretty silly.

Obviously, you shouldn’t pull any of this stuff if you actually have done something illegal. Nor should you if the cop is polite and business-like. I’m only talking about yanking his chain if he’s yanking yours. Above all, remain calm, even-tempered, and choose your words carefully and sparingly. Just being calm and unmoved while he’s shouting at you can be maddening for him in itself. He should be talking a lot more than you are. Never call him names or use any profanity. You also have to be willing to lose some time. The cop at the checkpoint delayed me a lot longer than if I had just groveled, and some people won’t see avoiding whatever humiliation he can dish out as being worth the trouble. And sometimes, it isn’t.

      • Ask them “Am I being detained? Am I free to go?” or repeatedly stating “I do not consent to a search of my vehicle” during a traffic stop will probably piss off any bad cops.

      • Never aggravate or provoke an officer regardless of how they’re behaving. One shouldn’t grovel either. Neither of those will help you. Just know your rights and maintain your composure. If you’re looking for advice on dealing with specific situations then there are plenty of videos on youtube. “flex your rights” has some good ones.

It’s better to view encounters with police as an obstacle course. Smart, law-abiding people may have to jump through a few hoops on occasion. But it’s in our interests to tolerate a little minor inconvenience if it helps catch criminals and get them off the streets.

      • To Richard – Your behavior was very foolish. You should never do anything to irritate the police. I have been stopped a few times for stuff like – illegal right turn ( I told the officer truthfully that I had not noticed the sign saying right turns on red not allowed ), not slowing down in a construction zone (there were no workmen present and no construction equipment just a sign which I hadn’t noticed), running a red light ( I told the officer truthfully that I had thought I could get through the yellow light but misjudged (actually it is illegal in Texas to speed up to try to get through a yellow light)). The last case was at a T-intersection with no other traffic in sight.

By not arguing with the police you save time and possible trouble. In Texas you can get most of the fine waived and the arrest removed from your record if you take a safe driving course. This used to be something you could do on a Sunday. When I did it once they gave us free pizza which was pretty good. The last ticket I got I did the course online which is very easy.

      • Jim, I said it was situational and if you haven’t been pulled over for a real reason. In all your examples you had clearly broken the law.

    • I haven’t ever been pulled over “for nothing”. I was speeding, I rolled through a stop sign, I violated HOV, my taillight was out, etc. Being rude to the cop is not going to get me out of there so I can go about my business. Being polite to the cop may cause him to give me a warning instead of a ticket, and may cause the judge to downgrade my offense if it goes to court (last time I was in court, the judge directly asked the cop, “was he polite to you?”). There is just no incentive at all to be rude, even if I think he’s never going to shoot me because I am a middle-aged professional white guy.

      • Amen to this. I’ve never been pulled over for no reason, and I see no reason to argue with a policeman. The judge might be more willing to listen, but I can’t see a reason for a policeman.

  2. are they being treated differently by the police? if so, how come the statistics don’t back them up. assuming that blacks do 3x more crimes than whites, which it looks like they do, they also proportionally are killed by the police by the same factor. it’s not “black lives matter” but rather “all lives matter”

  3. I don’t get it when blacks complain about being pulled over by police for being black – i.e. it’s a minor nuisance but not the worst thing in the world. In my college days I got pulled over by the police and searched one time for being a Phish fan (as evidenced by my bumper sticker), because hey, the stereotype is true, Phish fans smoke a lot of weed and do other drugs on average. The cops found nothing and let me go and the experience was only as humiliating as I let it be in my mind, which is to say, not at all. I’m not sure what having an attitude would have gained me in this situation.

  4. How many minutes of your life will be spent being questioned by a policeman? For those few minutes, anyone can afford to be deferential. The office is in charge, you are not, for this short period. If you can’t be unnaturally polite just briefly, then you’re the one with a problem.

  6. I told you Gingrich is scum. He’s simply an opportunist. His career is over so he decided to hitch on to Trump Train. Pro immigration/invasion, pro NAFTA and bad trade deals etc

On some issues he’s another White liberal who happens to be a Republican. If Trump puts Newt on the ticket I wont even vote. Doesn’t matter in my state anyway.

    Newt:

    http://althouse.blogspot.com/2016/07/if-you-are-normal-white-american-truth.html

“If you are a normal, white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America and you instinctively underestimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk.”
Said Newt Gingrich (after the Dallas massacre).

  7. Black expectations might be exemplified by the two brothers with gray braids who passed me in a Smart car today in SF, registration sticker ten months out of date. They apparently weren’t worried about a vehicle stop.

    • Oh, that’s common in FL. Last week I was behind a car w/ an expired tag from 2011 and another one with the tag installed updside down! Also, paper temporary 30-day tags are usually month out of date. And, yes, almost always NAM drivers. I scroll through the mug shots for my FL county every morning – dozens of NAMs arrested every day for driving with an expired license.

      • TBH it’s hard to feel like failing to pay for a $50+ sticker is a serious crime. At one point I’d gone several years without updating mine.

Perhaps it’s a sign of social decline, but as an upstanding citizen you have to take the victories where you can. The government is full of bullshit runaround for conscientious law-abiding people, but rarely does anything to punish the habitual users and abusers of the system.

  8. One of the reasons why white ‘men’ and Asians are being ditched in record numbers by their women is because of the house slave attitude and a instinctive boot licking behaviour that passes for ‘smartness’ among those two have been groups. It is also funny that the same group of keyboard nazis rant and rave about their mythical manliness and shit storming abilities of Vikings and samurai sword
Blacks seem to have learnt their lesson from their American experienc and have a spine. No wonder your wife/daughter wants to cuck you

    • With all other factors being equal, a black man has to earn around $154 000 more than the average income of a white man ($60 000) in order for white women to choose him over someone of their own race.

White men also have the highest responses from all races of women (except black women) than any other race of men in online dating.

      http://www.yutaaoki.com/blog/dating-your-race-counts-from-okcupid

Of those surveyed who mention a racial preference in dating, white women, of all racial groups, have the highest number of women preferring white men exclusively (54%). Black women were at 22%.
