  1. So do many Puerto Ricans, no? Here’s an 80s clip for you:

    • Maybe it’s part of the reason why they saw fit to pursue their own best interests and remain a US colony rather than pursue independence, like some of the other Spanish-speaking countries nearby.

      • They choose to remain part of the US because of social security, medicare, medicaid, and tons of other federal programs. There is no way they are going to give up that kind of cash infusion for “independence.”

    • Really like the Pet Shop Boys, but this had to be their most overtly gay video. Almost everything else they’ve done is also gay, but its at least tempered and muted.

      • It’s gay in the literal homoerotic sense. It’s not about some other part of gay culture or identity.

  2. The article states that he ran on a platform for Puerto Rico Statehood. In this climate, I wonder if that’s feasible.

    • Romney and Ryan would love nothing better than to add two Democratic Senators and a country full of nonwhites to our nation, but Trump’s election may have bumped the time line back a little. If Jeb or Hillary had won, it would have happened by already.

  3. Conquistador American. The ruling class of most of Central/South America looks like that guy. They have a nice thing going. A small, connected, white-European ruling class and 1% (which in some countries actually includes a significant portion of Jews as well, though most people don’t realize that) that lord it over their population of serfs and healots. This is where the U.S. is heading.

America is going to continue to get both shabbier and more wealthy at the same time, as the 1% continues to pull away from the pack. People don’t understand how much further we can fall. Look at this building collapse from the Mexican earthquake. My point isn’t the collapse, but look at that building. Is there a building that shabby looking anywhere in America? Well, there will be plenty of them soon enough.

  5. The leaders of most South American governments and businesses look more white than their native populations. The same racial hierarchy exists in the Southern Hemisphere where those with Spanish, French, Italian, German and Dutch ancestry rise to the top. When I have travelled in those regions people were very open about the fact that having Caucasian blood confers higher status. Again, the inequalities are not due to oppression, it is due to the natural outcomes of HBD.

    • Rosello is a quite Spanish surname, common in Catalonia and the Balaeric Islands (that’s where his great-grandfather was from, by the way). He looks white because he IS white.

  8. That’s why America is extremely fortunate that most of the third-world invasion here is comprised of Latinos. They don’t have the extreme hostility towards white Christians (or Jews) that is present in many African and Middle Eastern countries.

      • Consider Haiti, Zimbabwe, and what’s been happening in South Africa. Lots of anti-white violence. Blacks in America have also been quite hostile to whites. Does anything like that happen among Latinos? My sense is that for the most part, no.

The Nigerian students where I work don’t seem angry the way black Americans are angry.
But I’m glad we don’t have Somali students. Somalis and other Muslims from Africa seem to be angry grievance -mongers. The Nigerians we get are Christians.

His parents were born in cuba. He was born in puerto rico. And moved to Miami as a kid, He’s even part spanish. It’s seems your objection is that he’s a white hispanic instead of a mestizo hispanic, amerindian hispanic or african hispanic. Why do you object to a white hispanic getting the brownie points and not any of the others? Not that I think any of them should get points. But why them and not him?

      • :We need MaryK to confirm”

Reporting for duty! I personally think he just looks like a white guy and doesn’t look especially Mediterranean and certainly not “guido.” Nothing in his appearance indicates what social class he is from. He could be a Nordic-Mediterranean hybrid,as I am. But I’m half Irish and this man is lighter skinned than me. Of course there are men in Italy – both in the North and in the South that have a similar look to Governor Rosello. Blood is mixed all over Europe.

On the issue of statehood, it’s easy to see why Puerto Ricans on the island would want statehood if they think it would lead to financial gain for P.R. But as a current American citizen, I don’t want any move that would result in more easy votes for the Democratic party or increase the number of people who need economic assistance. Culturally, Puerto Rico is part of Latin America. It really should be an independent nation.

I’ve just been watching a documentary about the British middle distance runner Sebastian Coe, because I’m bored, and a sideways shot of his face pinged my Jewdar. Checking on wikipedia it turns out he is half Irish and half Indian on his mother’s side, and Jewish on his father’s side. Kind of disappointing seeing as he’d always seemed so perfectly English, but at least I could spot the Jew in him. And we’ll always have Steve Ovett.

  22. “Colorism” is a big thing among Latinos. This one Latino grandmother I know is always showing me pictures of her grandchildren and she’s very proud of the ones who look whiter than the others. “He looks so white, doesn’t he?” These conversations are always awkward. Latinos certainly aren’t “natural conservatives,” but on average, it seems safe to assume Latino voters prefer politicians who are or who look white.

  24. There seems to be a low key meme that Trump’s approval is on the upswing. It isn’t. At least not as part of any meaningful trend.

The 538 aggregator properly weighs and averages all the polls that measure Trump’s approval (although they don’t include PPD’s poll which is criminal). 538 only missed the popular vote by 0.7% so these guys know what they are doing.

    https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

If we examine the trends, we can see that Trump’s honeymoon lasted from late January until early May. His approval was at ~42% an on a downward trend when he fired Comey, which essentially marked the end of the brief Trump honeymoon. Comey was fired on May 9th and by May 20th, Trump had dropped to 38.8% approval where it has more or less remained for the last 4 months. Trump’s approval currently sits at 39.1%.

Since May 20th, Trump’s approval has gone as high as 39.9% in the aftermath of Handel’s humiliation of Ossoff and as low as 36.6% in the aftermath of the Sessions feud, The Mooch and the Healthcare repeal debacle. Any improvement in Trump’s popularity over the last weeks should be seen as a reversion to the mean now that Kelly is running a tighter ship, the hurricanes were handled well, the economic boom continues to accelerate and people have simply just started to forget about the July craziness and the Charlottesville incident.

other politics: Big race this upcoming Tuesday for the AL Republican primary. I don’t really have a problem with Strange, but in AL we can do a lot better. Moore winning would be a huge blow to McConnell and would put the overwhelming majority of GOP Senators on notice that they are vulnerable to a Bannon backed primary challenger. This will simultaneously force them to cling more tightly to Trump while killing any chance that may still exist of the DREAM Act passing. It will also be great to see Vox, NeoGaf and DailyKos cry about it.

Now if Moore wins and healthcare repeal fails against next week, oh boy. McConnell is very strong in the conference, but Trump is going to be furious and he is going to want a “win”. The pressure on McConnell to nuke the filibuster will be enormous. And not just from Trump, but from the base, from many of the big donors and even from members of the conference who will be becoming increasingly worried about a primary from their right flank.

If Moore beats Strange despite Trump’s backing Strange, forget about any amnesty bill getting out of the Senate, even if Trump is stupid enough to push for it. In contrast, if Strange is able to pull it off that will be seen by Congressional Republicans and possibly even Trump himself as the go ahead for amnesty.
