Stranger than fiction
These charges stemmed out of an investigation that had something to do with illegal campaign finance fundraising from a millionaire Israeli rabbi.
It gets even deeper. The investigation by the FBI started not too long after Grimm left the FBI, where he used to work. Did he give his colleagues there reason to believe he was a crooked guy who would be a good target for an investigation? Or just infuriate the wrong people?
NY local news stories often read like old-fashioned noir detective novels.

In his defense (sort of), my casual impression is A LOT of closely-held companies do this sort of thing. I know a lot of contractors who’ve said f*** it and just gone back to being tradesmen. No way they can compete with every mom-and-pop cheating on payroll and not paying workers comp premiums. Restaurants and retailers are notorious for this sort of thing. I bet we see more of this as people hanging on by their fingernails to upper class status try to keep the balls in the air.

Actually, this very suggestive photo could have been designed by a lot of the men on this blog. I mean they almost always talk about women in term of desiring sex, “gaming,” and PUA. Anything we hear about what makes a good wife has to do with a wife’s utilitarian value to her husband. Rarely do we hear about marriage and family – what it takes to be a good husband or good wife. So this photo, which seems to show a woman getting read to give head, is the perfect illustration to attract the kind of men who post here.

MaryK, if you don’t recognize that sign as distinctly guido, I have a hard time believing that you’ve spent much time around guidos.
King of Jeans is closed, but the sign is still there. It’s located in south Philly in a SWPL paradise that was overrun with mobsters just a couple of decades ago. I still remember the first time I saw it, one morning back in 2008. I’d just moved to the neighborhood and I was going out to find a cup of coffee for my girlfriend when I turned a corner and saw that glorious sign. I couldn’t believe it. I was in awe. I just stood there staring at it for a good minute. Then I had an uncontrollable fit of laughter that must have looked weird to anyone else who was on the street.
The future of the sign is in question. Hopefully it’ll be moved to a museum, which is where it deserves to be:

Robert, let me ask you this: if this sign had been found in any other neighborhood and had been over a store owned by someone who was not Italian, would you have thought “guido” when you saw it? Something tells me that you just used that vulgar sign to confirm a bias you already had. Yes, guidos are vulgar. But American culture is awash in vulgarity. And guidos are not powerful enough in American society to have any significant influence on public morals. You claimed the sign made you laugh. But I wonder why you didn’t contact the proper authorities to try to object to it.
I actually saw in Bensonhurst in 1980 something in a public park much more vulgar than even this. But in 50 years of living with and near Italians this was the only incident. Some boys (or men) had taken a white T-shirt and drawn a pair of women/s breasts on it and hung it on a basketball hoop. I was horrified at the sight of it, and thought, “if I found out which punks were responsible for doing this, I’d get a wooden spoon and beat their _asses until they were redder than spaghetti sauce.. Other people in the community must have objected because the T-shirt was not there for long. Or maybe the boys who put it there took it down after a few hours of giving the locals a good shock for fun.. Who knows?

Guidos like anybody else can be self serving. Hiring Mexicans is in vogue nowadays. Everybody does it, even Chinese and Indian businessmen use Mexicans for menial work. Low skilled blacks have been backed into a corner and expect to lose out to Hispanics in the coming decades. I expect backlash of Hispanics from blacks.

In Hebrew the term for guido-like guys is ‘arse’. ‘Frecha’ is used to describe the female equivalent.
I would say these terms are used fairly often, sometimes in jest.

Now this is just silly. Howard Stern a guido? Seinfeld’s Kramer? What you’re doing is transforming guido from its original meaning into an all-purpose term for any person who seems working-class and shows some kind of personality. Based on this definition, even I could be called a guido (or in this case guidette!) This is being done because none of you on this site want to admit that you have anti-Italian bias. Of course true guido types are found in all ethnic groups, but this doesn’t change the fact that the term guido is used almost exclusively for Italians. There are always people who fit the stereotype of a group they don’t belong to. I was riding the Amtrak train several years ago and ended up dining with a man from a small town in Ohio. He was socially liberal, while I’m socially conservative. I joked to him that each of us typified the image of the other’s hometown. Also, I’m much more sexually conservative than either of my parents even though I was born in the 1960’s and they in the 1930’s. Stereotypes are considered crass for a reason.
As to the “matziah” I don’t believe this term is used or even known by many people. The mainstream media would certainly not use it.

Was this comment serious? You seem too intelligent to believe something this absurd. Maybe I’m misreading what you mean? If what you meant is that stereotypes started out having some basis in reality and then got corrupted into caricatures of the reality, then you could be right. I heard that Milton Friedman once said “all stereotypes are true.” I believe he meant what I just wrote and not the literal meaning of the words he used.
As for “guido,” people are free to give the word any meaning they choose. But the original meaning of guido was a dumb obnoxious type who acted ostentatious. Most working class people of any ethnicity aren’t like this. The fact that “guido” is now being used to describe all working class men may even indicate that its working class men who are being stereotyped rather than Italian-American men.
